Lake Andrews (AKA the Puddle)
While there are many elements to successfully catching a trout or striped bass on a fly, it arguably starts with the ability to cast a fly. Learn the basics of fly casting in this hour-long session and perhaps catch a fish from Prexie’s Puddle. Alex Wood ’66, who started fly fishing at the age of 12 and has pursued the sport from Alaska to Argentina, will host.

Details for the Mahoosucs Range Backpacking Trip from trip leader Renee Blacken ’05:

The itinerary is tentative and subject to change based on weather and trail conditions.

Friday, October 14

  • Meet at the Notch Trail trailhead on N Pond Road off of Success Pond Road out of Berlin, NH at 9:30am.
  • Hike the Notch Trail to the Mahoosuc Trail (AT) through Mahoosuc Notch to Speck Pond Campsite (6.1 miles)
  • Stay at Speck Pond Campsite (Lean-to shelter and tent platforms $15pp fee)

Saturday October 15

  • Hike from Speck Pond Campsite down Speck Pond trail to Success Pond Road (3.6 miles
  • Dirt road walk back to Notch Trail trailhead (1.8mi; or we could park a shuttle car at this trailhead on Friday)
  • Return to Campus

This is challenging terrain. Participants should have experience in backcountry camping and backpacking, and be reasonably physically fit. The Notch is a large boulder field considered by many to be the “hardest mile” of the AT.  Speck Pond is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in the backcountry. Participants should bring their own food and gear, including a means of purifying/disinfecting water. Bear box is provided at shelter.

If anyone is staying in Berlin and wants a ride to the trailhead, I will be driving through there around 9 am.
