Historic Campus Tour, September 12th, 10am-11:30am

Meet up location: Front steps of Hathorn Hall on Historic Quad

Want to know how our campus came to look like it does? Curious to hear tales about the early history of Bates? Join the Archives for a walking tour with stories and photographs about the history of Bates. 


Riverside Cemetery Gravestone Cleaning, September 17th, 4pm-5:30pm

Meet up location: Front gates of Riverside Cemetery, 192 Summer Street

Join staff from the Muskie Archives at Riverside Cemetery to learn about cleaning gravestones. Staff will work with the group to teach the basics and then groups will pick stones to clean themselves. Supplies will be provided, but you may wish to bring a pair of work gloves. Please wear clothes and shoes appropriate for outdoor activity and that can get dirty and/or wet. 


History of Bates Athletics, September 18th, 10am-11:30am

Meet up location: Front steps of Hathorn Hall

Join us as we talk about the early years of Bates athletics, from the founding days through the nineteenth century. Come hear stories about the people and places that make up the beginnings of campus sporting traditions. Baseball, football, and more! 


Historic Frye Street Tour, September 24th, 1pm-2:30pm

Meet up location: In front of Cheney House, 262 College St. 

Please join the Muskie Archives staff for a historic walking tour of Frye and College Street houses. Come learn about the people, architecture, and history behind the houses, and the tour includes historic images!


Trees of Bates: A History Tour, October 10th, 10am-11:30am

Meet up location: In front of Page Hall, 345 College St. 

We explore the evolution of the trees on campus from the farmland beginnings to the lush campus of today. Pat Webber will talk about the early years of tree planting and various tree traditions. Christine Murray, a Maine Master Naturalist and Ladd’s own Social Sciences Librarian, will be on hand to discuss the natural history of our trees and the challenges they face including issues of disease. 


Bates Founders Tour at Riverside Cemetery, October 17th, 10am-12pm

Meet up location: Front gates of Riverside Cemetery, 192 Summer Street

Come experience bucolic Riverside Cemetery and be introduced to Bates’ founding faculty and early contributors!

Families of Frye Street Cemetery Tour, October 31st, 1:30pm-3pm

Meet up location: Front gates of Riverside Cemetery, 192 Summer Street

This tour will explore the lives and deaths of the families and architects of the Frye Street historic district! Some led long and prosperous lives while others did not. Come hear about the talented architect who died too young after a couples vacay, the frail but popular socialite whose life came to a tragic early end, and other movers and shakers of the 19th and early 20th century Lewiston!
