Chronology of Muskie’s military service

  • March 26, 1942 – enlisted in U.S. Navy.
  • September 2, 1942 – entered active duty and assigned to 4th V-7 Battalion, Naval Reserve Class, Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.
  • December 9, 1942 – commissioned ensign.
  • January 5, 1943 – graduated from 4th V-7 Battalion, Naval Reserve Class, Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School.
  • May 8, 1943 – detached from Naval Training School (Diesel Engineering), Pennsylvania State College, State College, and assigned to 1st Naval District, Boston, Massachusetts, for “duty afloat in such diesel powered local defense vessel as [the district commandant] may designate.”
  • May 18, 1943 – reported to commanding officer, Naval Training School, Local Defense, South Boston, Massachusetts.
  • June 1, 1943 – detached from 1st Naval District and assigned to U.S.S. YP-552 (ex-TAORMINA).
  • June 7, 1943 – reported for duty aboard U.S.S. YP-552.
  • August-October 1943 – stationed at Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York.
  • November 27, 1943 – detached from U.S.S. YP-556 and assigned to Submarine Chaser Training Center, Miami, Florida.
  • December 1943 – January 1944 – stayed at Venetian BOQ [bachelor officer quarters], Miami.
  • February 14, 1944 – in Columbus, Ohio.
  • February 15, 1944 – officially detached from Submarine Chaser Training Center.
  • March 1, 1944 – promoted to lieutenant (j.g.)
  • February-March 1944 – attended Naval Training School ([Aircraft and Vessel] Recognition), The Ohio State University, Columbus.
  • April 6, 1944 – in Columbus, Ohio.
  • April 16, 1944 – in Chicago, Illinois.
  • April 19, 1944 – in San Francisco, California, and assigned to U.S.S. Brackett (DE 41), which was engaged in combat in Pacific until end of war. Member, Hull, Examining and Censor boards.
  • October 8, 1944 – “voting officer” in charge of War Ballot Program on U.S.S. Brackett.
  • July 9-14, 1945 – stayed at BOQ, Navy Yard, Mare Island, California.
  • July 29 – August 20, 1945 – granted leave from U.S.S. Brackett.
  • November 13, 1945 – detached from U.S.S. Brackett.
  • November 18, 1945 – detached from 12th Naval District, San Francisco.
  • November 22, 1945 – released from active duty at Boston, Massachusetts.
  • By December 18, 1945 – discharged from active duty.
