MLK Day Events – New Scholars Symposium in Microbiology
On Monday, Jan 15th and and Tuesday, Jan 16th, 2018, the Biology Department is hosting a New Scholars Symposium on Fostering Diversity in Microbiology: Research, Pedagogy, and Climate in STEM.
The panelists are:
Dr. Lori Banks, a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Joseph Hyser in the Department Of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine
Elvin Lauron, 4th year graduate student in the Microbiology PhD program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
Dr. Rebecca Pollet, a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Nicole Koropatkin at the University of Michigan
Dr. Angelica Riestra, a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Victor Nizet at UCSD
Ninecia Scott, a graduate student within the Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis program at Washington University in St. Louis
Here’s how you can connect with our visitors:
Monday 15 Jan, 10:45am to 12:15pm (Pettingill G65) panel discussion:
“Pathways through STEM Education for Scholars from Underrepresented Groups.” Don Dearborn will moderate a discussion that touches on things like how the panelists ended up in microbiology, where they see obstacles to URM student success, and what advice they might have for students’ success or sense of belonging. We will also open it up for questions from the audience.
Monday, other parts of the day: Panelists will attend MLK events of their choosing; grab them and talk with them!
Monday 15 Jan, 6pm to 7pm: Panelists will eat dinner with students in Commons. We’ve reserved Commons 211 for you to bring your trays and join the panelists to talk about life at Bates, career paths for STEM scholars from underrepresented groups, or anything else.
Tuesday 16 Jan, 9:30am to 10:50am, Commons 221: Panelist research presentations. Each panelist will give an 11-minute presentation on their own research on bacteria and viruses. The content of this session is intended to be accessible to students in biology and related fields.
We hope you can participate in these events and meet our panelists! MLK Observance Events Schedule
