Our Mission
Campus Life plays an integral role in the education of the whole person, a “process through which students become aware of their interests, community, and purpose in the world.” We deepen the student experience by providing resources and opportunities to explore interests through involvement in student clubs and organizations, social events and programs, outdoor education, first-year experience programs, leadership development workshops, and employment opportunities. An equity and inclusion lens is foundational to our work – we actively aspire to dismantle -isms and -phobias, and partner with students to do the same in their areas of influence. To ensure an inclusive and accessible experience for all, Campus Life student clubs and organizations embody this mission by abiding by the Club/Org Responsibility & Member Removal Policy.
Leadership Development
Campus Life embeds the Bates Leads framework into our student employment positions and in orientation sessions designed to provide student clubs and organizations with leadership skills to achieve their individual and collective goals.
The mission of Bates Leads is to support students and staff in understanding and cultivating leadership as the act of taking responsibility for solving a problem or achieving a goal. With a shared set of guiding principles and ample opportunity for practice and self-reflection, Bates Leads enable diverse students and staff to develop the concepts and skills to create positive change in their own lives and the lives of others.
The Bates Leads framework is based on the Social Change Model of leadership and includes the “7 Cs” or capacities, that ultimately lead to an 8th C or capacity: Change.
The 7 Cs are:
Consciousness of Self
Congruence
Commitment
Collaboration
Common Purpose
Controversy
Civic Agency
