Responsibilities of College Staff, Reporting of Concerns, and Violations
Responsibilities of Campus Safety and College Staff
Campus Life is responsible for administering these guidelines, and is available to answer questions and serve as a resource for students during the academic year.
The main responsibility of Campus Safety during a protest or other forms of activism, is to mitigate risk. If the wellbeing or safety of members of the community may be compromised, and/or if facilities may be damaged, or operations are disrupted, Campus Safety will intervene in the situation. In cases where the situation escalates beyond what Campus Safety can reasonably manage, the Lewiston Police Department may be asked to assist with managing the protest or activity. Students can expect that professional staff members at Bates may also be present at protests and other activities to serve as a resource for the students.
Reporting of Concerns
Questions and concerns regarding activities that may be in violation of these guidelines should be reported to Campus Life by emailing campuslife@bates.edu.
Violations
Reported and alleged violations of this policy will be managed by the Office of Community Standards. Students who are alleged to be in violation of the guidelines set forth in this policy will be referred to the College Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Processes and, if found responsible, will be subject to the sanctions specified in the Code of Student Conduct. Additionally, students will be held responsible for the cost of damage incurred to college property.
Alleged conduct that is not specified here, but is a potential violation of the Code of Student Conduct or the Employee Handbook, will be addressed using the procedures outlined in those policies and may result in disciplinary action.
