Bates Letter to U.S. Department of Education on Title IX
Dear Members of the Bates Community:
As you may know, in November 2018, the U.S. Department of Education proposed revised regulations governing the handling of sexual misconduct on college campuses under Title IX.
We write today to let you know that Bates has submitted a letter to the Department, outlining our concerns about the potential impact of certain provisions on our ability to address issues of sex- and gender-based discrimination in a way that is fair and equitable to all parties involved and promotes a positive climate on campus. Our letter can be found on the Sexual Respect website.
Until the Department issues a final rule, Bates will continue to handle reports under our existing policies and procedures. Bates provides support to any community member affected by sexual violence. We treat all individuals involved in reports with dignity, respect, and care and we conduct prompt, thorough, and equitable investigations that hold those who violate our community standards accountable for their actions. These commitments remain unchanged.
We will keep you updated as the process unfolds. In the meantime, please feel free to be in touch with Gwen Lexow, Director of Title IX and Civil Rights Compliance, with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Clayton Spencer & Gwen Lexow
