BATES BACCALAUREATE 2022
Graduating seniors and their guests pause for reflection and celebration
SATURDAY, MAY 27: BACCALAUREATE
"Welcome members of the glorious Class of 2022....It is wonderful to see you in three dimensions in this iconic space" said President Clayton Spencer, addressing those gathered for the Bates Baccalaureate Service on May 28 on the Historic Quad. Referencing the words of a second grader from Petaluma, Calif., who told a reporter that she was excited to return to school without a mask because she could at last see everyone's personality, Spencer added: "It is so joyous to have all of you with us today with your personalities in full view."
Prelude
Before the soon-to-be-Bates graduates proceed into the Baccalaureate service — and just after Facility Services staff put the finishing touches on the Historic Quad setup — they mingle with friends and family, getting some of the many pictures they’ll take this weekend. Loved ones also take time to write “blessing tags” and attach them to trellises that the seniors will walk under.
Baccalaureate Address
The senior class chose Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology Josh Rubin, Ph.D., to deliver the Baccalaureate Address. Rubin spoke about flourishes and flourishing and the relationship between them. As examples, he called out Central Park and public libraries. He'd like to think of them, he said "as flourishes in our social world, as things that aren't regarded as strictly necessary or strictly feasible but nevertheless add flair, complexity, distraction and meaning to our lives."
Recessional and Gathering for Pictures in Caps and Gowns
Leaving the Quad to "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "I Can See Clearly Now" played by the Senior Band, seniors pass through one of the festooned archways, to greet family and friends, pose for posterity, and embrace each other and the realization that they are about to cross a threshhold.
