Trinity DouglasApril 29, 2024

During the holidays in 2001, your Mom sat Pop and I down and presented us a puzzling gift. It was a book about how to be grandparents. We were excited once we realized that our first grandchild was coming soon. As things evolved it turned out that no book was needed as you taught us.
I used to prop you on my knees, look directly into your beautiful blues and discuss with you history, politics, the weather, the growing up process. You intently looked into my eyes and I could see you processing and filing away all this data. It was during this time you had all your admirers tote you all over while you concentrated, pointed your finger and said “dat?” Sometimes you would puzzle over an object then return to it. Always when you wished us to giddyup, you would point to an object further away and begin again.
After giving us the gift of you, you introduced a food blessing you had learned in nursery school. As the whole family gathered around, you sang the blessing while encouraging all of us to join you. That exact blessing is still used at all family dinners. Some family members have mentioned updating the blessing we use. As it was a gift from you, I’ll never change what we use. I thank you for the blessing of your blessing gift.
Once you began toddling, you became my chunky munchkin no more and were a kind and gentle fellow. You played every sport available and even dabbled in hip hop dancing. Nothing caught your interest until you joined swim team at age 8. The swim team leaders taught you techniques and proper form for all the strokes you learned. You absorbed these lessons and then spent hours on your own practicing during your pool visits. Swimming was now Ethan’s sport. We have been unable to get you out of the water yet!
Your natural intensity allowed you to concentrate and excel in swimming. You belonged to a club team all year. Beginning in high school and all through college you swam for your schools setting and breaking records along the way. In the summers you did not dry out but instead became a life guard which included teaching younger kids how to swim. Life guarding enabled you to turn your sport into an income producing pastime while working out the wiggles.
As you graduate from Bates and prepare for postgraduate studies, I’m looking forward to what you accomplish. I know you’ll keep being kind and gentle. I bet you’ll intensely read and research, for after all you need to know what “dat” is and how “dat” works. Your craving for knowledge has done you well bringing much to you and those surrounding you. I am proud of you and all your Ethan-ness which I hope will continue to shine bright. I love you unconditionally and will always, my no longer rolly poly baby.

Rosemary CaruthersApril 29, 2024

Congratulations to Nick. We are incredibly proud of you, and, although there’s probably no way to replace time at Bates, we know many other great days lay ahead for you and your classmates. We are as amazed by the man who is now leaving college as we were by the newbie who entered four fast years ago. Enjoy graduation tomorrow, different as it will be, and always remember what an accomplishment this is. And take pity on your students next year – you were once one too!

I graduated Bates in 2002, soon after 9/11. A different national tragedy, but the environment was still very uncertain. If I had to go back and advise my young self, here’s what I’d tell her. Bates is an amazing, transformative experience, but it does not entitle you to an amazing job. You’re going to have to work hard to build your career from the ground up. Be humble, no task is beneath you. Work hard, but no more all nighters! Learn how to work smart and efficiently, and seize the opportunities that come your way.

Best of luck, Bates class of 2020!

Charis LovelandMay 28, 2020

Congratulations Hazel Simpson, Class of 2020! We are so proud of your achievements. Go forth and do amazing things! We love you and are so glad you’ve had four wonderful years at Bates.

Congratulations also to Tristan Kane, who deserves to be recognized for his double major!

Dear Bobcat First! 2020

First and foremost congratulations!! Not only is this a momentous occasion for you but also for your families and loved ones who have been on this journey with you.

I remember when we all met it was an early August morning and you were all moving into Small and Mitchell house. There was so much excitement, nervousness, and eventually tears as you said goodbye to your loved ones. I hugged your families and assured them that you will be ok. We ended that night going over ground rules for the week and a bunch of ice breakers. Y’all know I love ice breakers. What started out as a week filled with questions, anxieties, and unknowns ended in a week of friendships, discoveries, and curiosity about what’s to come. As a group, we built a sense of belonging which in my opinion was the biggest gift of it all.

This cohort is special in so many ways. Special to me because it was the first cohort and special because you made our program better. You became club leaders, intellectuals, athletes, fellows, actors, tutors, student gov president and reps you name it y’all did it.

I have learned so much from you all. We have laughed together, cried together, explored together, and learned together. You all show up for each other, your communities, and Bates. That is not only admirable but brave because you show up even when times are challenging. Thank you for sharing your stories with me. As first-gen students soon to be graduates. You will carry this identity for life. As you move into your next chapter in your life I hope you carry your first-gen identity with pride and joy. #Bates2020 #SuSePuede

#Bates2020

Weirdest year EVER!!–congrats on getting through it and graduating Bates! Best thing you ever did–believe that Bobcats rule! Best luck and stay safe!

Melissa Barone (Mosher)May 26, 2020

Congratulations 2020! I loved seeing the slide shows and videos of your time and Bates. I shed a tear that was mixed with both sadness and joy when I watched the pictures of your final days on campus. The sadness was because I am so sorry you missed the last few months on campus, and had to leave so suddenly. I can only say – I am sorry, and that leaving campus is sad and sudden whether in March or June. The joy came because I could see the community, the friendships, the laughter, the pride, and the responsibility you all exhibited. That is what makes you a Bates alum and those relationships and qualities will be resources for you for your entire lives. Congratulations and celebrate! Well earned! All of the alumni send our support and best wishes to you.

Looking for a job? Select a friend of your parents or a parent of your friends that you respect. Ask for an interview at their place of business and ask their advice on getting a job in this economy. They will work hard to help you find a placement that is right for you using all their contacts. Good luck and enjoy your future.

Gretchen ZieglerMay 26, 2020

Congratulations, Class of 2020 from a Class of 1974 grad! Just the other day, I changed my Facebook profile picture to use the “Proud Bates Grad” frame. Here’s the description I posted: “I changed my profile picture in honor of the Bates College Class of 2020. For years, Bates College has fostered that talents of people who have helped make this world be a better place. The college that was founded by abolitionists and was the first co-educational college in New England has continued to embrace equality and diversity, principles that this country struggles to implement to this day. I’m confident that new graduates will take up the fight.”

Ronald BrownMay 26, 2020

To the special Class of 2020: You are entering a world that needs your energy, intelligence, creativity, persistence, kindness, and compassion. Bates has prepared you well, I am sure. We in the Bates Family are proud of you. I wish you happiness, adventure, and opportunities to make the world better through your unique contributions!

Ann Austin-BeckMay 25, 2020

So sorry you lost out on your graduation festivities. However you have a valuable life lesson (predictability is relative) to add to your wonderful Bates Education. You are awesome! Congratulations

Colleen Huckabee ’58May 25, 2020

#Bates2020, say yes more than you say no. Be open to possibilities. Don’t allow people to take advantage of you. Read. A. Lot. Be curious; there’s a not a lot of that going on out here and it really can help the world. And don’t forget your Alma Mater (or your real mother for that matter)!

Tina EngbergMay 25, 2020

Alum tip: Commit to getting together with your Bates besties at least once a year…even if you all disperse and move across the country or around the world. The Bates bond is nourishing for the soul. Keep those connections. You will be grateful. Congratulations! You have an amazing journey ahead!

Kerrin StaskawiczMay 25, 2020

The end of your time at college may have been different than expected, but you are a Batesie and you have spent four years learning how to adapt and persevere with creativity, community, and grace. As an alumnus of Bates, I encourage all of you to reach out to your fellow alumni for advice, connections, recommendations, or just to say hello. We are united by our experience and by the institution that supports and believes in us. We count ourselves lucky and we have hope for the next generation of bobcats. One journey ends and another begins. Bates prepared us and we are ready for anything. Welcome to the next phase of your life! Go Bates!

# Bates2020 y #BatesGrad

Congratulations Emma grandchild#3. I remember the day we left your mother off at Bates I was sad to have leave the nest but Bates seemed to know this is common among freshmen parents. She received an excellent education at Bates enabling her to become an orthodontist ..we are very proud of you and await your next project

Congratulations to the Bates class of 2020 and our daughter Ronni Mak. You did it. We are so proud of you.

Congratulations Kyle! From early mornings in the pool (at least one brother had morning practices!) to late nights in the lab, this celebration of your achievements is truly the result of four years of earnest effort. Your stoicism and perseverance inspire me to press and push through challenges with my head always high, and your quiet confidence serves as a stabilizing force in the lives of all that you meet, including my own. I couldn’t be a prouder big brother as you get ready to show SoCal that Reny’s “3 for $10” t-shirts and Croc slip-ons do, in fact, belong under the lab coat of a chemistry PhD candidate, and that Maine-made means toughness and humility and passionate intelligence. I wish I could be home for this momentous occasion but please know I’m thinking of you on the other side of the world – from Guam to Maine, cheers!

Congratulations to the Bates Class of 2020 and our daughter Charlotte Hale Alberts. We are so happy for each you. We know this not the way you imagined your college careers would end. At least you have a world-class liberal arts education that will help you to handle what life throws your way.

To our dearest Charlotte, we are incredibly proud of you and your accomplishments. Attached is a photograph of you on drop off day in 2016. Since that day you have learned so much and grown in to accomplished young woman. We know that your short term plans have been hijacked by COVID-19, but your future is bright. We are love you so. Mom & Dad

Congratulations graduates!

If I can share one piece of advice to you as you make your way in the world it’s to encourage You to say, “yes!” Say yes to the things that scare you…that challenge you…and even the things that bore you. saying yes…is the key to unlocking your own personal journey of discovery and adventure. The only way to get more out of your life and to fill it with color and mystery is to say YES!

Wishing my nephew Joshua Andino, and each of you an infinite number of yeses in your life! God Bless!

Cire AndinoMay 22, 2020

Ally you have grown in so many ways at Bates that it is difficult to choose one moment. You began your career at Bates nervous about leaving home and your high school friends, worried that you would have difficulty making new friendships. You bonded almost right away with your field hockey teammates, many of whom will likely remain life-long friends; and then fostered new friendships through classes, living situations, and, of course, through ice hockey where you also developed one of your strongest, dearest friendships. Seeing you grow and create these new relationships was very rewarding as a parent. You have also grown tremendously in your academics, from your writing and other skills to your general curiosity and analytical abilities, one of the great rewards of a liberal arts education. Watching your struggle with a season ending field hockey injury during your junior season to persevere, and ensure your return to the playing field for her senior fall, while at the same time traveling abroad for your junior spring, participating in a program with no one else you knew at the time, again, having a wonderful experience and growing tremendously has been very rewarding as a parent. As parents we are also inspired by the way the senior class bonded together and made the best of a very difficult situation this spring, engaging in class-wide “senior week” like events which you organized on your own, remaining positive despite your senior spring being cut short. We are extremely proud to see you graduate and move forward in your next pursuits, and are also grateful for the wonderful experience you enjoyed at Bates, and can truly say through seeing the love you developed for Bates and the Bates’ community that this was the right choice of schools for you, one that will remain with you throughout the rest of her life. We also thank everyone at Bates that has enriched this experience for you, Ally! Love, Mom and Dad

Life can seem chaotic and messy, but when you stand back and look at the larger picture, the marvelous wonder of it all is apparent. There didn’t appear for us that one defining moment when it all came together for you while at Bates. You seemed to wind your way through things according to your own plan. You handled every curve-ball thrown at you with grit and grace. You had friends to lean on at Bates when you needed a helping hand and we were only a phone call away when only mom and dad would do. You ticked all the boxes and now you’re off into the world with a new career awaiting you in the Bay Area. Proud of you? Damn straight!

Thank you Bates College. You were a tremendous boon for our family.

Big J. Wow. Where do I begin? The perseverance and drive instilled in you is truly outstanding. The things I’ve seen you overcome and deal with are remarkable. To see you excel not only academically with one of the hardest majors, but athletically in which you accomplished outstanding feats and continue to improve is a testament to how strong and courageous you are. I know I rag on you and always give you a hard time but I wanted to let you know that you inspire me day in and day out and I love you more than you’ll ever know. You made it man. Congratulations.

As President Clayton mentioned in her welcome speech at the beginning of your time at Bates, that ‘this the class of 2020, the class with perfect vision’, and we think this has become true for all of you, you are an amazing, very accomplished group of young people. We are deeply sorry for all of you that you are missing out on this time of transition, well-deserved festivities, and getting the accolades for all your hard work. There is, however, wisdom, resilience, adaptability, to be gained during these difficult times. Initially you might think of your senior year with bitter sweet memories, over time, the ‘bitter’ will become less and the sweet will prevail, but the life skills gained, that come with dealing with this unexpected ending of your college time will stay with you forever.
We are proud of you all, and particularly proud of Tristan van Rooden our son.
