Consultant visits and data from December faculty meeting
Dear Colleagues,
This week we want to update you on a couple of things. First, we want to remind you of Susan Baldridge’s visit next week; second, we want to provide you with more information about Sheila Piñeres, who will visit Bates in March to consult with the Faculty Governance Review Committee, especially around issues of equity and inclusion in governance. Sheila is a professor of economics, and the Dean of the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida. Prior to her current position, she was Dean of the Faculty at Austin College in Texas, where she worked with faculty to create robust faculty governance. We have updated the first blog to include this information.
Second, as promised, we are sharing the data we collected at the December faculty meeting. The data reveals some interesting patterns, as shown in this summary table, and we encourage you all to take a look a this one sheet. In addition, below you will find access to the raw data we collected and see how the FGRC categorized it. Please note that there is no perfect way to categorize data like this is, but the committee is confident that we have identified some broad strokes. Please note that you can only access this data when you are logged in with your Bates credentials.
Question 1: On which decisions should faculty be the primary decision makers?
Question 2: How do you think faculty governance can be improved at Bates?
Question 3: What values ought to inform faculty governance at Bates?
Question 4: What would increase trust in faculty governance?
If you have any feedback you would like to share, for example on the consultant visits or on the process of our work, please use the anonymous feedback form below.
And finally, in case you’ve forgotten our committee’s charge, you can find that here: https://www.bates.edu/
