Student Evaluation Letters

On behalf of the Faculty Personnel Committee, I ask you to join with a number of current students and recent graduates to provide us a candid and confidential evaluation of the teaching of the faculty member identified in my email to you. The time and effort you take in writing will be an important investment in the College’s future excellence.

Please comment on the faculty member as a teacher, formal advisor, or informal advisor. The College’s criteria for excellent teaching (from the Bates Faculty Handbook (Article II, Section 2)) define teaching as the work of faculty both in the classroom and as advisors.

In the classroom this means:

  • encouraging and engaging students as scholars and artists.
  • creating an educational environment that permits an open exchange of ideas
  • embraces inclusive pedagogies and evidence-based strategies.

As an advisor, this means:

  • mentoring and advising of students to help students identify their academic passions
  • engaging in holistic mentorship tailored to the individual student’s needs during the arc of their Bates education.
  • providing accurate information about the curriculum and empowering them to make independent and informed decisions.

Your comments are due by November 1, 2024. We rely on you for a thorough and fair evaluation that gives direct student input into the tenure process. We do not provide these letters to the faculty member being evaluated. If you have questions about this process, please contact my office. (786-6067 or email deanoffaculty@bates.edu).

Thank you very much for your assistance,
Malcolm S. Hill
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty
