As it creates a 21st century curriculum, Bates will define an excellent liberal arts education in terms of the academic pathways it clears for all students. As our founders imagined, evolving concepts of social justice, equity-mindedness, and inclusive pedagogy will anchor our efforts. We will establish structures of decolonization that include implementing intentional pathways to recruit, support, and retain people of color and indigenous / first nations peoples, and their many intersectional identities.

New Curricular Requirement. The faculty approved a new curricular requirement for Bates students addressing Race, Power, Privilege and Colonialism in international and domestic contexts.

Inclusive Excellence in STEM: A project that seeks to identify and remove barriers in academic pathways for all students by assessing and revising curricula and pedagogy in the sciences. Funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)

Mellon Curricular Grants: A project that seeks to identify and remove barriers in academic pathways for all students by transforming, structures, curricula, and pedagogies at the academic unit level.
