Eligibility For Sabbatical Leaves
For Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors
Timing of Initial Sabbatical
Normally, a faculty member becomes eligible to apply for a first sabbatical after an award of tenure and a total period of fourteen semesters of full-time teaching at Bates. Exceptions to this timeframe are listed on the pre-tenure leaves page.
Timing of Subsequent Sabbaticals
Following the initial sabbatical, a faculty member is eligible to apply for subsequent sabbatical leaves after each twelve semesters of full-time teaching at Bates.
Deferral of Sabbaticals
For personal or departmental reasons, a sabbatical leave may be deferred up to four semesters without the loss of any credit toward the next sabbatical.
For Lecturers and Senior Lecturers
A Lecturer or Senior Lecturer appointed to an ongoing Lectureship position at the College who has taught twenty continuous semesters at Bates is eligible to apply for an initial sabbatical. To receive a sabbatical after twenty semesters, the faculty member should apply during the nineteenth semester (i.e. during fall of the tenth year). After the initial sabbatical, Lecturers and Senior Lecturers are eligible to apply for sabbaticals after each twelve semester period of teaching at Bates.
Timing Between Leaves of Any Kind
To be eligible for paid or unpaid leaves, faculty members shall be teaching full time in the College for no fewer than six consecutive semesters between leaves of any kind. Exceptions are granted for medical disability and parental leaves, and in unusual other circumstances at the discretion of the Dean of Faculty.
