Walk like a penguin!
Well yesterday “Old Man Winter” showed up once again for a taste of what’s to come over the next several months. Just in case you all forgot on how to prepare for the winter months here are just a few of some basic safety tips from “The Safety Team”:
Slips and falls. The walking surfaces maybe covered with snow and ice, so be sure to wear boots with good rubber treads to provide traction or contact EH&S to purchase a pair of ice grippers.
Walking slowly, taking smaller steps and always remember to walk like a Penguin to prevent slips and falls. In case you all forgot on how it’s done watch the following: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHaWGibGwyk)
Shoveling can be physically taxing and can lead to exhaustion, dehydration, back injuries, heart attacks, and other conditions. To reduce the risk of injury, shovelers should follow the following precautions:
- Warm up before shoveling.
- Push snow instead of lifting whenever possible.
- Shovel small amounts of snow at a time.
- When lifting snow, keep the back straight and lift with the legs.
- To avoid serious back injury don’t rotate or twist your body.
Snowblower safety is also something to think about…
- Never leave the unit operating in an enclosed area.
- Never re-fuel when blower is operating.
- Clear walkways, decks and driveways of items that may clog the chute.
- Never put your hand inside the auger or chute while running. Turn engine off and use a stick to unclog the equipment.
- Be sure to wear adequate winter garments and footwear that will improve footing on slippery surfaces.
Cheers
