Document your estate commitments and let us celebrate your future gift today.

The following is intended to help you and your attorney in drafting a bequest that satisfies your interests. As you consult your attorney on the selection of appropriate wording to reflect your own goals and intentions regarding Bates College, be sure our organization’s correct legal name appears in all final documents as:

“President and Trustees of Bates College, 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, Maine, 04240, a Maine nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number: 01-0211781.”

General Bequest of a stated sum of money may be worded:

  • “I give to President and Trustees of Bates College, 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, Maine, 04240, a Maine nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 01-0211781 [insert here the exact dollar amount].”

Specific Bequest of a certain asset from your estate may be worded:

  • “I give to President and Trustees of Bates College, 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, Maine, 04240, a Maine nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 01-0211781, [insert here a description of the particular property].”

Residuary Bequest, after other bequests and expenses have been paid, may be worded:

  • “I give to President and Trustees of Bates College, 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, Maine, 04240, a Maine nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 01-0211781, all [or a portion] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.”

Contingent Bequest if the person making the will is not survived by certain individuals:

  • “If [name/s of primary beneficiary/ies] do/es not survive me, or shall die within ninety (90) days from the date of my death, or as a result of a common disaster, then I give to President and Trustees of Bates College, 2 Andrews Road, Lewiston, Maine, 04240, a Maine nonprofit corporation, or its successor, Federal Tax Identification Number 01-0211781, [insert here the exact dollar amount, description of property, or percentage of residual estate].”

If you intend to include Bates in your estate plans, please document your commitment by completing the bequest intention form below.

  1. Complete all required fields in the form.
  2. When all required information is entered, a “Click to Sign” button will appear.
  3. Click the “Click to Sign” button.
  4. Verify your email address when prompted.
  5. After signing, you will receive a confirmation email. Open the email and confirm your bequest intention by following the provided link.
  6. The form requests a copy of your provisions mentioning Bates to complete the documentation process. To upload an image or document including your estate paperwork, please see Step 7 below.


If you experience any difficulty completing the form electronically, you may download and sign a paper version of the form here and follow the instructions below.

Instructions:

  1. Click the “Download the Bequest Intention Form” button above.
  2. The form will appear in a new window. Click the Download arrow in the upper right-hand corner of the new form. (It looks like a downward pointing arrow with a line underneath.) Save the download to your computer.
  3. Open the downloaded Bequest Intention form which is saved on your computer.
  4. Type your information into the form. Boxes outlined in red require a response.
  5. When you’re finished, click the File button in the upper left-hand corner of the document. Click “Save” from the drop-down menu. Close the document.
  6. Click the “Choose File” button below these instructions, and select your saved document. Click the “Open” button.
  7. Click the “Submit” button below the name of your document.
  8. You’re done. Thank you!
