Off-Campus Study Eligibility Requirements

The faculty of Bates College encourage students to consider a semester or academic year studying off-campus. To ensure students are successful in their programs away from campus and that this participation does not hinder their graduation plans, students must meet the following eligibility requirements to study off-campus.

Bates’ Off-Campus Study Eligibility Requirements (semester / academic year):
– Overall GPA of 2.5 at time of Off-Campus Study Registration deadline and up until program start. (Many programs/schools will require a higher GPA.)
– Good academic / behavioral standing.
– A declared major.
– Completion of the Off-Campus Study Registration process by the published annual deadline. This process includes a review of academic progress that requires students to be able to graduate from Bates.

Additional Eligibility Considerations:
– Bates requires prior world language study in order to study in majority speaking French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian locations. The requirement and equivalencies are outlined here. (Programs/schools may require higher levels of language study and/or language study within the past semester or year at the college level.)

Summer Study Abroad: There are no eligibility requirements to participate in summer study abroad programs. We ask students to register their plans with the Center for Global Education.
