On Campus Employment

On-Campus Work for Students in F-1 Status

If you are a student in F-1 student status at Bates College, you are eligible to work on campus. On-campus employment is defined as employment that occurs on the premises of Bates College for which you receive a Bates paycheck.

To be eligible for on-campus employment you must be enrolled in a full course of study and remain enrolled full-time. Students may work “on campus” up to 20 hours per week when school is in session, and full-time (up to 40 hours per week) during holiday and vacation periods. It’s very important to keep track of the number of hours you work per week to ensure you do not exceed the per-week limit.

On-campus employment requires you to complete forms through the Student Employment Office (SEO).  When hired, your new supervisor will submit a hiring form to the SEO. Please email seo@bates.edu, with any questions.

All F-1 students are required to have a Social Security Number (SSN) to work on campus. You will need to apply for one once you are offered a job. You do not need to wait until you have your SSN to apply for jobs. Read more about obtaining a Social Security number here.
