Pre-Award Activities

SPaRC works with faculty and staff to identify grant opportunities, develop a concept into a project, proposal development including budget generation and approval, and review and submission of proposals to external funders.

From Idea to Funded Project

Step 1: The Idea

Do you have a great idea? A new study theme? A publication? An invention? A different way of looking at a problem? If you have an idea, please be in touch with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance. We can support you and work collaboratively to find answers that will help turn your  ideas into fundable projects.

Step 2: Finding Grant Opportunities

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance and the Office of College Advancement maintain access to online resources that can be used by faculty and staff affiliated with Bates College to find sources of grant funding that fit their project plans.

  • GrantFoward
  • grants.gov – Most federal funding opportunities are findable through the grants.gov award search
  • Foundation Directory Online – please contact SPaRC (sparc@bates.edu) or the Director of Foundation Relations (rwary@bates.edu) for more information.
  • Contact SPaRC – need help? Contact SPaRC at sparc@bates.edu

Step 3: Let SPaRC know!

Let us know you are thinking of applying for a grant!  Complete the “Intent to Apply” Form. Completing this form does not obligate you to apply for a grant – it just helps get communication started.

Step 4: Proposal Development

Each funder has different requirements for submitted proposals. SPaRC can help interpret guidelines, develop proposal budgets, review your proposal narrative, prepare additional documents, complete application forms, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Step 5: Submitting your Application

Most funders require a signature from a signing official for proposal submission, and almost all proposals for external funding should go through the SPaRC office.
