Meet the 2024-2025 Community Outreach Fellows
Community Outreach Fellows serve as part-time members of the Harward Center staff, helping to connect the college to the off-campus community in mutually transformative ways. Each Fellow is responsible for working with Harward Center staff and community partners to coordinate and/or develop site- or issue-based volunteer programs.

Starr Bradley ’25
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Major: Psychology
Starr is a dedicated youth mentor with a passion for empowering the next generation. With several years of experience working with young people, Starr has been committed to helping youth navigate challenges, build self-confidence, and achieve their full potential. Driven by a deep desire to make a positive impact, Starr has developed and led various programs focused on personal development, mental health, and social skills. Their unwavering commitment to supporting others has made them a trusted and inspiring figure in the lives of many young individuals.

Savannah Compare ’27
Hometown: Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Major: Politics
Minor: Education
Savannah was raised in Auburn, Maine and currently lives in Boothbay Harbor where she enjoys volunteering in many capacities. She is a sophomore and plans on majoring in politics with an education minor.
Savannah coordinates the Lewiston Middle School Lunch Program.

Maria Femia ’25
Hometown: Canton, Massachusetts
Major: Psychology
Minors: Education and Rhetoric, Film, & Screen Studies
Maria is a psychology major with a minor in education, who became involved with the Harward Center after spending a lot of time in the local schools through community-engaged learning. She was a part of the team that began the Aspirations Club. Maria oversees the Auburn Mentorship group and facilitates middle school and Bates student pairings and aspirations days on campus. Maria believes mentorship can be used as a tool for educational and life success and has enjoyed watching the mentorship program grow and thrive. On campus, Maria is also a member of the field hockey team.

Elizabeth Gallegos Rodriguez ’26
Hometown: Denver, Colorado
Majors: Sociology and Educational Studies, with a concentration in Law & Society
Elizabeth is a junior passionate about community organizing and educational equity. Elizabeth is a community-oriented person, and while serving as a BCAT during her first year at Bates, became involved with the Harward Center. She enjoys exploring Lewiston, and one of her hobbies is trying new restaurants in L-A with friends (constantly searching for the best sweet treats).
Elizabeth will be coordinating the BCAT (Bates Civic Action Team) Program in the fall.

Lily Houser ’25
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Major: Sociology
Minor: Chemistry, with a concentration in Public Health
Lily is a senior sociology major who became involved with the Harward Center by collaborating with staff to establish the Aspirations Club. As president of the Aspirations Club, she has worked closely with the Harward Center to oversee mentorship at both Auburn Middle School and Lewiston High School. She has also helped facilitate Aspirations Days and organize student volunteers. Lily is passionate about the ability of mentorship to support, transform, and empower individuals. She is looking forward to welcoming local youth to the Bates campus this year and supporting their future goals! Lily is also a member of the women’s soccer team.

Quinn Hughes ’26
Hometown: Villanova, Pennsylvania
Majors: Biology and French & Francophone Studies
Quinn enjoys watching films, reading, spending time with friends and family, and being outside. He knew that getting involved with the greater Lewiston-Auburn community was greatly rewarding after starting his volunteer experience as a mentor at Montello Elementary School. Here he got to engage with students, learn more about them as people and community members, and participate in a wide variety of activities from playing games to drawing, and so much more.
He values connecting with people beyond the Bates campus and hopes to continue to connect fellow peers with organizations and local residents off campus to build great relationships and perspectives with his Lewiston-Auburn neighbors.

Inez Johnson ‘25
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Majors: Sociology and Politics, with a concentration in Law & Society
Inez loves people and believes deeply in creating community through fun. Her favorite things are ice cream, being outdoors, and cheering people on. A member of the Bates cross country and track teams, she understands the value that sports and play have in developing leadership, camaraderie, and joy. Her experiences connecting with Lewiston through the Harward Center have been highlights of her time at Bates, and she loves how this work brings people together.

Madi Mettler ’25
Hometown: Fairfield, Connecticut
Major: Mathematics
Minors: Education and Digital & Computational Studies
Madi loves the rain, good coffee, the ocean, and cute dogs. She became involved with the Harward Center through the Bates Education Department’s curriculum. She began tutoring at Lewiston High School (LHS) in her first year, leading to her current role in the college’s Aspirations Club. Madi now oversees and facilitates mentor pairings at LHS. She sees mentorship as an avenue for connecting Bates to the surrounding community, promoting individual success, and providing Lewiston students with role models, confidants, and advocates. Madi looks forward to expanding LHS mentorship and involving more committed Bates students in the program!

Trinity Monstwillo ‘26
Hometown: Corvallis, Oregon

Minor: Gender & Sexuality Studies
Trinity is a self-proclaimed coffee enthusiast. She loves reading and spending time with her cats and family. Upon arriving at Bates, she knew she wanted to contribute to the impactful work of the Harward Center and its strong engagement with the L-A community. This is Trinity’s second year as a Community Outreach Fellow, and this year she is thrilled to be coordinating the Book Buddies Program. Through Book Buddies, Trinity aims to inspire a love for reading among local elementary school students, fostering their enjoyment and passion for books.

Tammy Namangale ‘27
Hometowns: New Rochelle, New York and Lilongwe, Malawi
Majors: Politics and Gender & Sexuality Studies, with concentrations in Law & Society, Dance, and Queer Studies
Minor: Africana Studies
As a Community Outreach Fellow, Tammy is focused on using legal reform as a tool for liberation. Tammy serves as a Bonner Leader and has worked with the District Attorney of Lincoln County, Maine People’s Alliance, and other community partners. She is also focused on challenging African stereotypes and championing the work of African immigrants in Lewiston.

Ruslan Peredelskyi ‘25
Hometown: Kyiv, Ukraine
Majors: Politics and Dance
Minor: French & Francophone Studies
Ruslan was born in Donetsk and had to flee his hometown because of the war for the first time in 2014. In 2022, his family had to resettle again, coming to the U.S. Informed by his personal experiences, Ruslan’s work at the Harward Center seeks to empower diverse refugee communities of Maine and facilitate conversations on integration and intercultural experiences. Outside the Harward Center, you can find him in the dance studio, or doing choreography or yoga by the pond!

Alaina Rauf ‘25
Hometown: Somerset, New Jersey
Major: Biochemistry
Minor: Religious Studies
Alaina was born in Michigan and raised in Pakistan until she moved back to the U.S. for higher education. The Lewiston community is very dear to her as she attended Lewiston High School her freshman year. Along with her work at the Harward Center, she has been President of the Muslim Student Association for two years while serving as the President of the South Asian Student Association this past and upcoming year. She loves what the Bates and Lewiston communities have to offer.
In her free time, Alaina loves to watch documentaries, travel, spend time with her family, and keep her cat company. She looks forward to getting many current and incoming students involved in community engagement!

Olivia Reynolds ’26
Hometown: Cumberland, Maine
Majors: Sociology and Hispanic Studies
Being involved with community efforts during her time at Bates has shaped Olivia’s academic pursuits and strengthened her sense of place. She recognizes the reciprocity inherent in strong and supportive communities, motivating her work to grow students’ relationships with the greater Lewiston area. She loves live music, the snow, trail running, the ocean, and sharing good food with friends and family.

Annie Robinson ’26
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Major: Undeclared
Annie loves hiking, baking, going on picnics, and especially meeting all the dogs on campus. Freshman year, she joined the frisbee team and fell in love with the Book Buddies program at Connors Elementary School.
Annie will be coordinating the Playground Pals Program in the fall.

Jilly Scott-Lewis ‘27
Hometown: Portland, Oregon
Major: Biochemistry
The Harward Center was one of the things Jilly was very excited about when she decided to come to Bates. She immediately got involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, volunteering with Clover Healthcare and going to brunches at Blake Street Towers. The Harward Center helped her feel connected to a new community in Lewiston. When not doing these things, Jilly enjoys playing frisbee, reading, hiking, and exploring Maine!

Samuel Skinner ’26
Hometown: Saint Paul, Minnesota
Major: Undeclared
A former BCAT himself, Sam has worked in education both in Lewiston-Auburn and in his hometown of Saint Paul. His goal is to eliminate barriers between Bates and the community it inhabits through community-engaged work. When he’s not involved with the Harward Center, he’s usually cooking up a storm or hiking with the Bates Outing Club.
Sam will be coordinating the BCAT (Bates Civic Action Team) Program in the winter.

Xucheng Zheng ‘27
Hometown: Shanghai, China
Major: Neuroscience
Xucheng enjoys playwriting, music, cute dogs, social advocacy for people of color, and sunshine. She hopes to connect people with chances to express themselves by making art. She believes in the healing power of art since people always understand their identity, passion, and feelings better by engaging in art-making.
Xucheng developed a love for art and being a good mentor/communicator when she first started as a violin tutor and mentor at Lewiston Middle School. Nothing is better than seeing kids who love violin receive the opportunities and support they deserve. She sees the influence of volunteer work on individuals and looks forward to changing art into something accessible rather than the leisure of privileged people.
Xucheng is ready to stand by the local community, specifically the community of color, and advocate for more artsy volunteer work facing the community.
