Housing Accommodations

As part of its mission to foster diverse and inclusive learning and living environments, Bates College is committed to supporting students with disabilities or specific needs.  As a residential community, Bates prioritizes the residential experience as an essential part of its institutional commitment to educating the whole person.  All students admitted to Bates enjoy full access to its programs and services, including Residence Life.

Accommodation Requests

Accommodations to a student’s housing or a housing process come from one of two campus partner offices.  Housing does not decide these accommodations, but implements them once an accommodation has been approved.  To find out more about the approval processes, please check out the campus partner sites below that have more information:

It is important to note that students are not making a request for a specific housing assignment, but rather a request for an accommodation.

A standard housing assignment is a two or three-person sleeping room with bathroom facilities located on the same floor, but not in the room.  Requests for particular housing assignments based on a student’s preference, rather than need, for a particular type of living environment, such as a certain type of room or location or desire for a quiet place to study will not be honored.  Single rooms represent a small portion of available housing options and availability may be limited depending on the time of year.

Housing Accommodations Suggested Deadlines

February 1stThis is the suggested deadline for current student requests for the next academic year.  This deadline allows the accommodations processes adequate time to happen prior to the housing selection process, which begins in March.
November 15thThis is the suggested deadline for students participating in Winter Placement to request housing accommodations and resubmit documentation if necessary. If you have any questions about your accommodation expiration date, please email accessibility@bates.edu.
June 1stThis is the suggested deadline for incoming students to request housing accommodations and submit documentation for the academic year so that the accommodations processes have time prior to first year housing assignments being sent.

While these deadlines are a suggestion, each accommodation process reviews requests on a rolling-basis and students should still follow the same application process.  Please note that availability for certain types of accommodations may be limited at later points in the year or during a semester.  The college will make every attempt to implement approved accommodations based on current availability.

Assistance Animals

Assistance animals needed to support students with disabilities may qualify as service animals or emotional support  animals.  Individuals wishing to have an assistance animal live with them in a residence hall should contact the Office of Accessible Education to make appropriate arrangements.  This conversation should occur prior to bringing an animal to campus.  For definitions, policy, and procedures regarding assistance animals, please see the Office of Accessible Education – Assistance Animals.

Where can my accommodation be met?

Below is information regarding which buildings meet certain accommodations.  Please also check out the Room and Services Information page for more about living in the residence halls, what to bring, what not to bring, and more.  You can also check out the floor plans for each building (must have Bates login); please keep in mind that blueprints are kept for facilities purposes and published as general information, they are not always complete pictures of what is available.

Accommodations and Housing Selection

Please note that accommodations can be approved for different lengths of time (e.g., a semester, a year, multiple years, etc.) so you will want to ensure that your accommodation is active for the upcoming year prior to housing selection.  Details about your accommodation can be found in AIM or by contacting the Office of Accessible Education.

  • You will participate in housing selection as any other student would to select a space that fits your accommodation. Residence Life values students selecting their own spaces because it allows them to consider their accommodations and their specific housing preferences to pick a spot that works well for their unique experience at Bates.  If you have any questions about what spaces fit your accommodation, please look at the information above or contact housing@bates.edu for more information.
  • In some rare circumstances, Residence Life may reach out to students ahead of selection to offer a pre-placement.  Pre-placement offers are typically only made to students who are likely unable to meet their accommodations during selection – for example, a rising sophomore with accommodations for a single room and air conditioning.  If you are made a pre-placement offer, you would receive that information in February and would be given additional information about your options and next steps.
  • If you select housing that does not meet your accommodation, that is okay!  Everyone’s wants and needs change over time and that decision is entirely up to you.  If you later decide that space will not work for you because of your accommodations, you will need to reach out to housing@bates.edu to let Residence Life know.  You will likely need to wait until Summer Placement or until a suitable location opens during the year.  Please note that availability for certain types of accommodations may be limited at later points in the year or during a semester.
  • If the space you chose during housing selection meets your accommodation, that is great and you would stay in that location!
  • If the space you chose during housing selection does not meet your new accommodation and you would like to move, please email housing@bates.edu to talk about moving during Summer Placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once an accommodation is approved, the Office of Accessible Education will notify you via email and Residence Life will be copied. Residence Life will then reach out to let you know next steps and an approximate timeframe for your move.

This depends on the time of year and the process.  If you are choosing your room during the housing selection process, please feel free to pick the space that you are interested in.  If this is a mid-semester move or a placement during Summer Placement or Winter Placement, we may not be able to take preferences into consideration.  When possible, we work to consider student preferences, however, many times of the year, our flexibility and availability of spaces are limited.

Residence Life would be happy to chat about this more with you or explain parts of the processes.  Please reach out to housing@bates.edu and let them know you have specific questions about the housing portion of the accommodations process.
