Long- Term Disability (LTD)
Your Long Term Disability Coverage (LTD) is provided through Aetna Life Insurance Company of America and participation in the LTD plan is required.

Bates College provides you with credits added to your pay equal to the cost of the LTD insurance that is deducted from your check.
LTD coverage provides for replacement of 60% of your monthly income tax-free in the case of disability.
There is a 180 day waiting period for benefits to begin. For Staff members, during the first 30 days you would use sick and/or vacation days you have accumulated and then short-term disability would apply for the remainder of the 180 day waiting period (note: you must contact the Human Resources Department to apply for short-term disability).
Faculty members would contact the Office of the Dean of Faculty to discuss a Temporary Medical Disability Leave during the 180 day waiting period.
