Uncle Johnny’s back!!
After a short hiatus to the Maine Project for Fine Art Conservation, the portrait of Prof. Jonathan Y. Stanton is back in the Library.
He’s looking better than ever after the conservation work on both the cleaning of the painting and the reconstruction of parts of the frame.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Johnny”, Prof. Stanton assumed the responsibilities of librarian in 1865, in addition to teaching, and some of the changes he implemented are still a part of our tradition today. He established a system wherein the first scholars in the classes became his assistants, he kept the library open “a few hours each day” and substantially increased the collection to 12,000 volumes.
We are honored to have him back gracing our walls and giving a measure of gravitas to our Main floor lounge area. Come see him next time your in the building.
