Bates is the first college to offer all-campus institutional access to the New Play Exchange.  NPX is  a database which is meant to connect performers with playwrights and to increase access to new works outside the standard theatrical repertoire.

It allows the perusal of new scripts, and filtering by cast size; subject content; gender, ethnic, and/or sexual identity; and many more criteria.

One unique feature of the New Play Exchange is that it connects directors directly with the playwright.  Because every play includes contact information for the author, the author’s publisher, or the author’s agent, the process of securing licensing and asking permissions are greatly streamlined.  In addition, budding playwrights can — for a small fee — develop their own profile which allows them to upload their theatrical works for consideration by others.  A director can even request approval for script changes!
