Ladd Library will celebrate Banned Books Week, September 25 – October 1, with a series of introduced conversations on aspects of censorship along with a display of some historically banned books that are from the Special Collections of the library.

 

Tues, Sept 27

Robert Farnsworth, poet and senior lecturer in Bates department of English, will discuss attempts to ban works by American poets, Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg.

Weds, Sept 28

Rick Speer, Library Director of the Lewiston Public Library, will talk about how issues of censorship affect public libraries today.

Thurs, Sept 29

Sanford Freedman, Associate Professor of English, will discuss the controversy and banning in the U.S. of James Joyce’s Ulysses and the important decision of United States v. One Book Called Ulysses.

Each talk is open to the public and begins @ NOON in the Ladd Library Lobby
