Returning library materials
As of Oct. 28th, Ladd Library is currently not open to the public. Campus buildings are accessed by Bates ID Card only.
Replacement costs and reimbursements
Replacement costs are fully refundable upon return of items.
2022 Seniors have been billed replacement costs for all materials checked out. Rising class students have been billed replacement costs for items more than 3 weeks overdue.
Replacement cost will be refunded in full for each item returned, unless damaged or otherwise unusable or the college has purchased a replacement for the collection (either ebook or physical).
All books, DVDs and CDs are credited $75 each; Chromebooks are $300, Green Bikes are $150.
The library is open 8am-4:30pm, Monday – Friday during the summer. We process credits each work day.
How to return items
You can drop them off at the Circulation Desk
Ladd is open 8am-5pm May 25-28.
We are closed for Commencement and Memorial Day.
We are open 8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday during the summer.
You can use our 24/7 return drop boxes
- The first book drop is located at the front entrance, inside the exterior set of doors, in the glass wall to the left of the doors – accessible from both inside the vestibule and inside the building.
- The second book drop is located outside at our shipping/receiving door (facing Hedge and Roger Williams). It’s a huge black book drop which somehow manages to visually disappear.
- Chromebooks and Green Bike keys may be returned in the media slot of the drop boxes if the building is closed.
You can mail items back to us
Materials can be returned to the library by library or media mail:

Borrowing materials over the summer
Ladd Library does not close for the summer break.
The book loan period for rising class students is 28 days. Seniors have 150 day loan period for CBB materials. (Class of 2023 has rolled into the senior loan period privileges as of June 21st.)
You have to keep track of your due dates and renew them every month until you are done with the material during the summer just like you do during the academic year.
You can manage your library account online at LibrarySearch Login
If we (or Bowdoin or Colby) require the materials you have checked out for Fall course preparations or for another patron, you will need to return them, by mail if necessary.
Please contact Brenda Reynolds (breynold@bates.edu) for assistance with any library billing questions.
