Joseph Corn was a visiting scholar at the Science, Technology, and Society Program at MIT last school year, enjoying the stimulation, friendship, and marvelous library resources available there. He writes he is in high gear on a book about the early history of consumer technologies, a look backwards from life with personal computers to earlier encounters people had with sewing machines, bicycles, and particularly automobiles, perhaps the first user-unfriendly machine on which users became addictively dependent…. Mary Ellen Crook Gartner writes “Pete ’59 and I continue to instruct skiers at Sunday River Ski Resort, a most enjoyable experience!” They taught mostly Elderhostel guests the past year, some much older than they, but a few much younger!… Robin Davidson says his retirement will be in January or April 2005 when he will return to Massachusetts. Beyond this he writes he has “no plans for retirement other than trying to extend my time on the planet a bit.”… James Hall is still teaching at Santa Clara Univ. in California, and enjoying it…. Nancy Harrington Walsh was forced into retirement because of outsourcing, but now wonders, “How did I ever work full time?” She says her recent experiences in support of the Massachusetts marriage amendment were “a rude awakening to unfortunate political agendas in Massachusetts.” Husband Jerry is busy most every day of the week with his law practice in Chelmsford, Mass, focusing primarily on elder law…. Arthur and Sara Kinsel Hayes have sold their business, the Sign Stop, so are now officially retired. Renovation of their 1846 house in Belfast is complete and they anticipate a busy life in retirement on the coast of Maine…. Ray Hendess is keeping busy in his new non-paying career of designing Web sites for nonprofits, along with attending theater, skiing, hiking, exercising, gardening, and remodeling the Julia Morgan-designed home he and Rory Keller own in Petaluma, Calif…. Louise Hjelm Davidson is the moderator of Presbyterian Women in her presbytery in central and southern Ohio…. Steven Hotchkiss reports he wakes up every day looking out over Lake Erie, and asks “to sail or not to sail?” Steve is moderator of the local UCC Church, advises entrepreneurs, teaches economics and international marketing research at a local college, studies in grad school, and sings in one of the oldest men’s choruses in the U.S. He says there is no money in any of this stuff, but a lot of fun…. They’re supposedly retired, writes Jackie Hughes Cot‚ but they haven’t felt that way. They spent two weeks last spring in Korea attending a Lions Clubs International board meeting and traveling. The first two days they attended an International Sight Symposium, with experts (her husband being one) from six continents speaking on different aspects of vision from medical research and new treatments, to needs in eye care, education, rehabilitation…. After 36 years with Polaroid, Peter Kliem retired as senior VP in 1996. He then founded a drug discovery biotech company with a group of Harvard professors. He started another, SelectX, in 2002, which he says is thriving in Worcester, Mass…. It rained 13 days out of 17, but Richard and Joan Mickelson Krause ’61 had a good Hawaiian vacation anyway. They bypassed the tourist areas and visited all the national and state parks on the five big islands, and learned a lot about the Hawaiian people, their history and culture…. George Marchant reports he is still working as a staff assistant to the director of contracting at the Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. It researches and develops weapons and ammunition…. William Mees is “the resident curmudgeon” at Lawrence Academy, where he teaches creative writing, exposition, poetry, and short stories, and is active in school affairs…. Jon Prothero and wife Margaret travel around the country, play tennis and golf, and do a lot of antiquing. Jon is still doing some consulting and has recently developed a parenting course for use in the state of Florida. He is currently working on a new course in advanced driver improvement for use in the Florida Traffic Safety System…. Kenneth Russell writes his book of short stories, The House on Ellen Street, is finished and available in bookstores or from him. He is now busily writing stories and tales for the next one, The House on William Street, which he hopes to have published in 2005…. Daphne Scourtis Meyer says she and Dick have retired “only from paid employment.” She volunteers at the Naples Public Library and serves on the town’s comprehensive plan committee. She also enjoys her association with Greater Portland Landmarks, a preservation group giving historical and architectural programs and tours of Portland neighborhoods….
