Jim Carignan says retirement is absolutely wonderful — as long as he and Sally ’62 can afford it! They went to Italy for two weeks in May. Jim was just elected chair of the Maine State Board of Education and continues on a number of other boards including the planning board in Harpswell and the Muskie Board of Visitors. He’s now president of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, too…. After 22 years as chief cook and bottle washer of her one-woman translation business in the Netherlands, Val Clark weeded out the deadbeats and now only has fun clients who pay on time. She and Bob spend time at their weekend place remodeling, painting, rebuilding, and doing gardening and yard work. Adam and family are in Belgium; Tiffany and her family live in a suburb of Amsterdam; and Willow and family are in Italy. All three surprised her recently by joining her for her 65th birthday…. Last spring George Drury led a rail tour of Spain, and took a driving trip to California to celebrate an aunt’s 90th birthday; then it was on to Denver for a reunion of student personnel services graduate students from 40 years ago…. Gail Emerson hopes to retire by December 2004, although she will continue to do “vacation relief” physical therapy. She returns to New England from Hawaii every fall for the foliage…. Enjoying retirement at their new home they built on Square Pond in Acton, Maine, Steve Garvin and Jane also enjoy visits from their two daughters and families. Son Scott ’89 lives in Asheville, N.C., and is seeking employment as a drug abuse counselor. Steve continues as an organist for the North Parish Congregational Church and both he and Jane sing with Seaglass Performing Arts (Chorale) and last September they performed at National Cathedral in Washington…. Beverly Graffam Ketchum’s daughter was married at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, Maine, in June. Alums in attendance included father of the bride Carl Ketchum ’62, uncle of the bride Paul Ketchum ’64, and a number of guests. Bev has been exercising in a Fit Ball class for over a year with two Batesies — Will ’58 and Bev Husson Callender ’59…. After living in Maine for five years, Catherine Harwood Shepard moved back to Vermont. She retired from nursing and has taken up writing poetry. She is president of the First Baptist Church Women’s Fellowship…. A first grandchild arrived for Mary Jane and Jack Henderson and will be moving from California to Massachusetts in the fall. They are thrilled at the prospect of being “hands-on” grandparents. Jack’s volunteer jobs include treasurer for the Midcoast Senior College, doing demonstrations at the Maine Maritime Museum, and several roles at their church. He also enjoys boating in the Bath-Boothbay Harbor area in his 17.5-foot bowrider…. A summer highlight for Arthur ’60 and Sara Kinsel Hayes was to be a two-week visit from granddaughter Brittany at their cottage in Belfast, where she’d be attending a children’s theater workshop…. Diane Lynch Izzo is retired from the Gillette Co. in Boston after 20 years doing market research. She moved to Coatesville, Pa., where she bought a home in a community for “active adults over 55.” Her two sons have moved her grandchildren far away (South Carolina and Utah). Her daughter lives in Philadelphia, so she gets to see her often…. Bill and Marilyn Nash enjoy their new home in Templeton, Mass. Retirement gives them time to work hard at landscaping and gardening. Less demanding and more fun is hospitality, visiting, and entertaining children and grandchildren. Bill does some supply preaching and some adult Sunday school teaching…. Retired at their home in Lake of the Woods, Va., Vic and Barbara Oldach Larson enjoy a relaxing lakefront home with multiple boats. Barbara serves on the local volunteer rescue squad and has had various jobs such as supply officer, ambulance readiness coordinator, assistant captain, and training officer. She went to the national EMT-Intermediate certification and is a CPR instructor and an EMT-B instructor. Her husband is also involved and instructs and is an EMT…. Louise Reid serves on the Council on Aging, the board of the friends of the library, and a committee developing a long-term vision for the local schools in Ashburnham, Mass. She also works two days a week in the schools, and takes a variety of art classes…. Gretchen Shorter Davis and Jerry enjoy summers in Millinocket and the rest of the year in Portland. “We travel and still enjoy Elderhostel programs. This January, for the first time, we’ll host two programs in Florida. Let us know if you might like to join us at Sanibel or Key West!”… After two years working with architects and builders, Margo and Jack Simmons are settled in their new home in Falmouth, Maine. Their newest grandchild and her sister live about six miles from them. Jack continues to work, except in the cold winter months when they escape to Longboat Key, Fla. Lexis Nexis will be publishing a new edition of his book in late fall…. Bill and Carol Sisson Vose were to spend part of the summer in Northwest Arctic, Alaska, studying the fauna and flora in the area of Kotzebue Sound. Kotzebue is an Inupiaq village 25 miles within the Arctic Circle, whose Native American inhabitants speak the Malimiut dialect. Carol’s great-nephew Uyanna attends an immersion school there where only the regional dialect is spoken and written. He is attempting to teach his great auntie this formidable language!… Recently visited in Southern California with Sally Marshall Corngold ’62 and Sally Benson. Carol Smith is still teaching a bilingual second grade class in Salinas, Calif. Her Spanish is improving but she’s wondering how long the state will allow the teaching of bilingual education. Her daughter May Robertson ’94 is teaching in Salinas too. Daughter Kia (Oberlin) lives at Stanford with Sally Marshall’s son Josh. Alex ’95 is still in Colorado…. Dick and Gisela Van Bree finished their travels last spring at Naples, Maine, to visit Dave and Sue Kittredge Barnard and enjoyed a mini-reunion with a number of Bates friends. Channing Wagg keeps busy with volunteer activities, most notably the Boxborough Housing Board, which he chairs. Their charge is to create affordable housing within the town. He and Sara have also received domestic abuse prevention training and work with their church in this capacity. He also keeps busy with the boat, the yard, and babysitting one or another of the grandchildren. Their youngest son lives in the Los Angeles area so they travel there and visited Cabo San Lucas the last time, where Channing tried marlin fishing, but only managed to get seasick!… After 38 years of ordained ministry in the United Church of Christ, Steve Wardwell retired in 2003. He and Deb enjoy the golf, skiing, snowshoeing, fishing (Deb wants him to try), and wide-open spaces. The grandsons call Taos “Gammy’s Ranch.”
