Dick and Phyllis Smith Baldwin ’48 were in Japan in November 2002 as guests of the Japan Amateur Radio League, where they had a wonderful time meeting many old friends…. Stan and Madeleine Richard Freeman are active with the Penobscot Valley Senior College, which started last fall. Mad is curriculum chair and recruits volunteer instructors for courses to meet popular demand of the senior college membership. Stan coordinates one of 10 new courses that started in March — his is called Health Care — Then and Now, with the seniors providing the “then” and a variety of providers doing the “now.”… Arlene Friend gets the most out of her rotary phone and her ’89 standard-shift Escort. “No computer as yet!”… Phil Isaacson recently completed a book on cemeteries for young readers (ages 10-14) but said “9/11 and Iraq II have driven the publishers underground; I’ll either await happier times or revise the book for adults.”… Ruth Moulton Ragan notes that their oldest grandson is a freshman at Bates and represents the fifth generation of Moultons to go there…. Ken Munroe makes good use of the Bates tennis courts and facilities at the stupendous gym. He also skis, both cross-country and alpine…. Janice Prince Washburn says she and John are happily “up to their ears” in volunteer work, and find it can be more time consuming than a full-time job…. In November, Dick Sprince was installed into the Holland Club — a primary requirement was to have been qualified in submarines for 50 years. Also in November, he lectured the second classmen and classwomen at the Naval Academy on the Korean War Shore bombardment. He had been a helicopter gunfire spotter for the battleship USS Missouri…. Vesta Starrett Smith writes, “I was in China with daughter Kathy just before Thanksgiving and suffered a detached retina and macula, so had surgery as soon as I returned to New Hampshire and have been recuperating ever since. The good news is that my sight has returned; the frustration is that it’s still wobbly and double in that eye.”… Bob Vernon is looking forward to a normal life in the spring after completing chemotherapy for lymphoma. “Not too bad — between treatments I go about at least some of my normal activities.” His grandson, Jeremiah Vernon, entered Bates last fall and two granddaughters are considering it…. Last September, Sally White Byrkit, daughter Cindi ’74, and brother John White ’39 covered 1,800 miles in England, Scotland, and a bit of Wales, in a not-too-successful search for family history. This winter, she and Cindi attended the National Figure Skating Championship in Dallas.
