Susan received her nurse practitioner’s license and Sean teaches civics and economics and coaches middle school basketball at Epping High School in New Hampshire…. Dave Bass wrote: “Erin (2) has taken her new role as a big sister to Kyle in stride. I was promoted to district manager of the South Hudson Valley for Hannaford Bros. We moved from Maine to New York, and found a great house in East Fishkill (we’ve heard most of the jokes, thank you). Nancy ’92 got a promotion, as well, to full-time mom. She’s still negotiating the pay package, but the benefits have been great!”… Pam Batchelder Johnson continues to edit newsletters for a variety of organizations in Charlotte, N.C. Son Bo (2) is in a two-morning-a-week program. (Bo is the waving baby in the back of the 2002 Bates calendar.)… Ian Bleakney enjoys his eighth year teaching science to public high school kids in Oakland, Calif. He spent 1999-2000 teaching high school science in Mexico City on a Fulbright Exchange and last summer in Maharashtra, India, on a Bates Barlow Alumni Travel Grant offered to alumni in education (see www.bates.edu/barlow-grant.xml). In India he met with science teachers and students to learn about secondary science education in urban and rural areas of the country…. Danny Blum is in Ohio at Developers Diversified Realty Corp. dealing with commercial landlord/tenant issues. He is also playing ultimate Frisbee and last fall his club team again advanced out of sectionals to regionals…. “The spirit of Bates really allowed me to be who I am today,” says Christina Chiu, co-founder of Asian-American Writers Workshop. She returned to campus last September to read from her work. Her collection of stories, Troublemaker and Other Saints, was a Book-of-the-Month Club first fiction selection, and her first novel is scheduled for release…. Leah Ciappenelli and her partner, Julia, live in Watertown, Mass. After getting her M.B.A. at Simmons, she’s project manager at Inflexxion, a science-technology-health company in Newton. She’s happy to use both her M.S.W. and M.B.A. Leah and Julia spend free time playing ice hockey and snowboarding up north…. Tammy Coleman Kirtley lives in Albany, N.Y., with her husband, where she teaches an integrated first grade class (regular education and special education). Her sister Becky Coleman Fiske ’93 and Carson ’93 had a son, Zachary, in April 2001. Tammy celebrated New Year’s with Rob Hemstreet, JoDee Lymburner, and Jenn Perloff ’92. To her it seemed a perfect year to spend a quiet evening with close friends…. Ted Curcio reports: “Steve Katz and I continue to finalize our plans to move to Baja Mexico and open the surfing and tennis compound. Federales continue to hassle the contractors but we hope to be finished by early 2005.”… Julie Englund Farhm writes: “Zachary is (4), Erika (2). Teaching introductory college physics at Franklin Pierce College two days a week. Mike ’89 and I are thinking about either making our house bigger or moving into a new one.”… Jennifer Farrell O’Reilly started her own business, Work Life Endeavors Inc., and is doing external executive/personal coaching as well as developing workshops and trainings on work/life balance for individual employees and organizations. Sarah is now 3. Jennifer saw Cathy Pendergast Shay and John in December and their three boys: Nathaniel (4), John (4), and Zachary (1). She reports that the Shays “amaze me with their creative and effective parenting techniques!”… Maria Fasciano Walsh is at home with Jack (3) and his new sister Chloe. They continue to update and renovate their house…. Carl Fey is assistant professor of international business at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden and also serves as associate dean at the Stockholm School of Economics in St. Petersburg, Russia. Carl is taking a leave of absence, August to December 2002, in Shanghai. He continues to train and race in ski-orienteering, orienteering, and cross-country skiing. The capstone of his work year was a large research grant from the Swedish Research Council; personally, the highlight was marrying Natalia Libo of Russia. She completed her M.B.A. degree in Stockholm and is a member of the Russian foot-orienteering team…. Brendan Gillis works as an accounting manager for the law firm Rucci, Burnham, Carta & Edelberg, LLP, in Darien, Conn., and lives in East Norwalk, Conn. He has taken a few banking and accounting classes and toys with the idea of going back part time for a master’s in accounting…. Emily Goff Decker and Tom enjoyed catching up with Sue Vitters over the holidays…. Mike Golden moved to Chicago about nine years ago. He worked for a real estate company and left with a partner to start their own company, now with 30 people. He’s getting married…. Linda Goldman started a new job at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Bureau, got married, and sang backing vocals on a CD to be released by Boston-based band The Modifiers…. Chris and Tris Gulderstern-Reilly are in the Pittsburgh area. After eight years as a mental health counselor to children, Tris is excited about her new job as volunteer coordinator for Junior Achievement. Chris works at Lincoln Financial Advisors, where he specializes in estate and charitable planning and serves on the board of directors for a local mental health/residential services organization and the planned giving committee for the Arthritis Foundation…. Cynthia Gutmann plans a July wedding to Keith Morgan, a Washington College graduate, in Auburn. Nancy Heim-Luger will be one of her bridesmaids as will Marita Bryant, who works in the geology department at Bates…. Nancy Heim-Luger reports a move from Bloomington, Minn., to Eden Prairie, Minn…. Greg Hite is finishing his dissertation at the Univ. of Virginia…. Aaron Humphrey moved to the Aspen, Colo., area, where he’s a senior lighting designer at a lighting design firm, for whom he’s won three international design awards. Aaron has worked on World Cup races and coaches ski racing for Aspen Valley Ski Club (he was happily surprised to discover that one of the other coaches is Caroline Damon ’01). He’s the local rep for Stockli skis and crewed for the Olympic speed events (downhill and super G)…. Amy Hutchinson and husband Scott Larson continue to teach in Boise, Idaho… After spending eight years down South in Rome, Ga., Lynne Khoury-Swanbeck’s husband accepted the head men’s soccer coaching position at West Point. Lynne writes, “‘Whirlies’ (you know who you are): come one, come all for a visit.”… At his wedding to Krista Nadir, Jeff Kubick was joined by Jamie Maloney ’90 (best man) and his wife Amy Cutler ’90, Mark Peabody ’90 (a groomsman), Sean and Sue Carnegie, Mike Golden, Tim Shaw and Elizabeth Myrick ’93. Krista and Jeff honeymooned in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Jeff now works with Jamie for a small telecommunication provider that they helped start back in January 2001…. Amy Kummerle Marzen reported: “My husband, two boys, and I have been back in France for a year now and sti
ll love it here.” Child three is on the way…. Robin Levin Marshall reports from Seattle that 2001 with husband and 2-year-old son included a visit back East in August. “Great to see all family and friends and eat lots of ‘lobstah! Continued our tradition of an annual trip to Hawaii — Poipu, Kauai, is heaven on earth!”… Chris Manges works full time for NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School). “I am now working in Patagonia, Chile, sea kayaking and mountaineering. I came home for the holidays and spent the winter solstice hiking up Mount Moosilauke with Don Medd and Ian Shearer.”… Last summer, Bill Myers moved back to Auburn, Maine, with wife Kristina and two children. Bill teaches a special-needs classroom at Lewiston High School…. Mike O’Brien has been promoted to director of operations at Shareholder.com, a provider of shareholder communications services based in Maynard (Mass.), with more than 750 clients. Mike earned his M.B.A. from Clark…. Jonathan Roberts is in Boston as a graphic designer…. Tim Shaw’s former company, Ultraprise, imploded last year. He made it through several rounds of layoffs but his number came up in mid-September (yes, that week). Then followed “networking, resume buffing, sucking up, etc.” Great news in March: birth of baby Helena… After Taylor Emma’s birth, Jennifer Shepard Pounders is back to work as an associate vice president at Carter Ryley Thomas public relations in Richmond, Va. She’s happy to report her company opened a daycare after five women had babies within three months…. Kendra Sowers and Charles Dinklage wrote from single-digit Burlington last winter: “Fingers get cold scraping the snow off the car, but it’s worth it to be able to ski and sled again. Hannah and Alex are having a ball sledding and ice skating.”… Richard Taylor got bored with his Ph.D. program in Buddhist studies halfway through his dissertation. “Depressing to write that, but the truth.” He’s now the global training director for Reuters News and Television. “Finally published my encyclopedia, Death and the Afterlife: A Cultural Encyclopedia.” (See Bookshelf department in this issue). “Also obtained permanent legal guardianship of my niece, Kayla, and we live in a sleepy town in New Jersey.”… Katie Tibbetts Morello has her teaching license (pre-K through third grade) and earned her master’s in education from George Mason in 2001. She’s now at home with baby Dominic…. Kevin Wetmore, teaching at Denison University, met up with Kris Edwards and her husband at a show he directed. He’s been published (see Bookshelf department) and also got married to Maura Chwastyk. He continues to act, direct (Hedda Gabler) and work as a stage combat choreographer. Kevin and Maura are leaving Ohio and moving to the West Coast…. Sharon Williams Schultz is at home with Mallory (5) and Carolyn (8) in Delmar, N.Y. She works on her master’s in guidance and counseling at Sage Graduate School. A joy is directing her church’s children’s choir — 27 members! Lots of fun, especially considering she confesses to limited musical talent. Sharon is involved with suicide prevention and answers crisis calls one shift a week. She also speaks about depression and suicide to teens in schools…. Kristin Wolcott Farese finished a post-master’s training program in couples and family therapy and works part time as a clinical social worker at the teaching hospital in Gainesville, Fla. “I’m toying with starting a small private practice, having another baby, and possibly returning to the San Francisco area within the year!”… Adriana Zabarkes Rabkin, in San Francisco, earned her M.B.A. from Haas Business School (Berkeley) and went to work for Prudential Capital. She quit her job after the birth of her son, Noah Elias Rabkin — she reports no regrets!… Suzi Ziegenhagen King and Mike live in Montrose, Colo., with their two boys (4 and 1). “Life is busy.”
