He and Charyn celebrated seven years of love and wedded bliss on Aug. 19. They live on a small, remote 90-acre farm with their four Arabian horses, eight wonderful dogs, and nine cats. Jay works in Belfast, at Dutch Chevrolet Olds-Buick, Pontiac, as the finance manager…. Betsy Bracken Barrett reports that her daughter, Kelsey, is now a student at Bates, Class of 2005. “I’m really enjoying getting reconnected to Bates through her eyes. She loves it!”… Kevin and Victoria Simonelli Barry are planning to attend Reunion in June, hoping to reconnect with “many friends we haven’t seen in years!”… Rick Betterley is president of Betterley Risk Consultants, a national risk management consulting firm, which is the publisher of The Betterley Report, recently cited by Congressional Joint Economic Committee in a report on terrorism. He was a crewmember in 2000 and 2002 Newport/Bermuda Sailboat races, and has taken many sailing cruises on the coast of Maine from the family’s cottage in Friendship…. Janet Boeshaar Joscelyne lives in Farmington, Conn., with husband Charles and his teenage daughter. Charles teaches math and computer programming at Miss Porter’s School and also coaches cross country, crew, and physical conditioning. In 1987, Janet survived a traumatic brain injury, from which she is still recovering. “I have retrained to teach tai chi and chi gung with master B.K. Frantzis in California. My tai chi study is ongoing in California and Brookline, Mass. I teach geriatric patients locally.”… Ken Bristol has lived in Fairfax, Calif., for the last three years, “the sleepy hamlet that has the dubious distinction of being the ‘Home of the American Taliban,’ John Walker Lindh.” Since Sept. 11, 2001, he has revived his Bible teaching and identifies himself to intimates and friends as “missionary to Fairfax, Home of the American Taliban.”… Former Maine State Sen. and Senate President Jeff Butland is a regional administrator for the Small Business Administration. He oversees the SBA’s programs and services in New England…. Tom Carey and Polly have been living in Washington, D.C., for over two years since he was promoted by the FBI, with responsibilities for all counter terrorism investigations. On Sept. 11 and immediately thereafter, he was the FBI official in charge of the Washington, D.C., investigation and in early October was detailed to FBI headquarters as one of the officials in charge of the overall investigation. On Oct. 20, the director made him inspector in charge of the anthrax investigation until April 2002, when he was promoted to the Senior Executive Service as the section chief for domestic terrorism investigations for the FBI. He works closely with officials at all levels of the government, Congress, and foreign governments. His daughter Megan worked this past summer for the FBI in the Washington field office…. Mel Donalson donated a collection of books on African American and women’s studies to the Hyannis (Mass.) Public Library as part of a ceremony honoring his mother, Dorothy Donalson, for her four decades of community service. Also present at the event were John Jenkins ’75 and Dave Doolittle, a trustee of the library…. On March 28, Richard Franks had lunch with Lou Garafalo and Cliff Boggis at the Naked Fish Restaurant, in Saugus, Mass. They reminisced about “the good times at Bates” and “laughed a lot.”… Debbie Gahm received a plaque marking her 15th year as a library media specialist at Lake Region High School in Maine. She was the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration grant coordinator for the last two years. “We used the grant to align our curriculum to the Maine State Learning Results and to develop common assessments for all courses,” she explains. “It’s something that all school districts have to comply with within the next five years. Lake Region High School is one of the leaders in the state.” She’s been tapped to chair the reaccreditation team for New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which all secondary and post secondary schools must do every 10 years…. Charles Gaputis reports, “Same wife…same kids…same old grind…same old same old.”… John Glancy is president and CEO of DPIC Insurance Companies Inc. based in Monterey, Calif. His daughter Katherine is in her first year at Villanova. She was three-year starter in lacrosse and selected as an Academic All-American in her junior and senior years. Son John Patrick (16) was recently named one of the top 25 sophomore baseball prospects in Illinois and also led his high school hockey team to state finals, scoring the team’s only goal. “Obviously, children get academic and athletic skills from their mother,” says John…. Mary Griffin has dropped Judkins as a last name. Last May, she graduated from the Univ. of Southern Maine with a master’s in counseling. “I’m beginning a new career in school counseling only blocks from my dorm at Bates (Page) at Pettingill Elementary School, and also another Lewiston elementary school, Farwell,” she says…. Debbie Hanscom Christopher says she was up in Maine this summer and drove through the Bates campus. “There are so many buildings that weren’t there when we were students,” she notes. “I must say it doesn’t seem possible that we are about to have a 30th Reunion.”… Marshall Hansen, Carla, and their two sons are now well settled in Minnesota following his retirement from the Navy two years ago. He’s taken the past two years off from work to be a part-time “Mr. Mom” and to do volunteer work for their church and town…. Franklin Haskell and Joan Faella ’74 are about to start enjoying the classic “empty nest” as their youngest heads off for a year of service before starting college. Joan is cranking up a family therapy practice while working part-time at an agency and creating quilted works of art. Frank is now employed by MITRE Corp. doing “computer security stuff” after many years at Digital…. Deb Hibbard lives and works in Albuquerque, N.M. A community organizer and activist for more than 25 years, Deb’s current efforts are dedicated towards southwestern water issues and the restoration of the Rio Grande…. Kathie Hickman enjoys life in central Vermont with her family, husband Bob Labbance ’74 and Simone (9) and Griffin (12). She works half time, volunteers in school, takes jazz piano lessons, and gardens, hikes, bikes, canoes, and skis…. Heidi Lee Hoerman has taught graduate library science at the Univ. of South Carolina since 1995. She’s a confirmed bird watcher and current president of the local Audubon Society chapter…. Alan Kelley ran for office as district attorney in Kennebec and Somerset counties (Maine Prosecutorial District IV) and recently celebrated his seventh wedding anniversary with Beth…. Katherine Kiefer says that she’s “fighting gravity, looking for parking places, answering telephones, dead-heading, and weeding.” Her adventure last summer was as one of six team members in a six-hour go-cart race, part of a charity fundraiser…. Douglas King reports that their oldest, Lindsay, is in Chicago to study organizational psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Son Matt is a sophomore at Michigan State, and Paul has moved up to junior high school…. John Labbe is self-employed as the principal consultant of his own practice, called JEM Performance Consulting. His business is helping businesses improve the performance of their employees
…. Susan Marshall has changed her name to Susun Terese. She has a store in Farmington, Maine, and a cart at the Maine Mall in South Portland selling her fleece clothing. She home schools her oldest child and travels to Hawaii for spiritual retreats. She practices Reiki healing…. Steven Mason is co-author of Judaism and Spiritual Ethics, published by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations Press in 1996. He is a vice president of the Chicago Board of Rabbis and occupies himself primarily with the life of his congregation…. Kaylee Masury celebrated her 50th birthday last year, and her daughter Holly celebrated her 21st, with a seven-day Caribbean cruise. Last year, she was runner-up regional Rookie of the Year for Liberty Mutual. “Maybe I didn’t catch top prize in that category,” she says, “but I am pretty sure that I was the oldest rookie — maybe even nationwide.” She is certain she was the oldest female player in the Liberty Softball League. Holly graduated from Emerson with a “$120,000 degree” in marketing. “She is waitressing,” Kaylee reports dryly…. Dorrie Mitchell has officially done every job in community theater now that she has directed. She’s on her fourth production. She’s been retired for five years and still not bored. She and Dana Ring planned to celebrate their 25th in December 2002. They recently took their fifth solar eclipse tour, a cruise around Great Britain, short on the solar, however. She’s active with her local library, delivering books to childcare centers and the homebound…. Bev Nash Esson and Don will also celebrate their 25th anniversary. Their older son is a sophomore at Rensselaer Polytechnic, and younger son is in the eighth grade. She serves on the Wells (Maine) Recycling Committee. Her family sponsors two Hopi students through the Futures for Children program…. Bill Niemasik retired from the Marine Corps after 27 years and now works for Delta Airlines as a pilot ground instructor…. Jim O’Connell just published Becoming Cape Cod: Creating a Seaside Resort. He works as a research associate at Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston, an enterprise of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard…. Brian Parker‘s family lumber business is now in its 121st year of operation. His nephew, who represents the sixth generation, started full time this year. He and Carol celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in May 2002 with a cruise down the Seine in Paris…. Lois Phillips Tolis and Victor ’74 are a year behind at 24 years of marriage this past summer. Their daughters graduated with honors from high school: Christine was No. 3 in her class and will graduate from Middlebury in May, and Diane was No. 1 and is a sophomore at Bates. She occasionally sings with community choruses and substitutes for church organists…. Debbie Roy is a cofounder of the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society (www.northctveg.org) and Hope’s Place Cancer Support Center (www.hopesplaceinc.org)…. Kenn Sassorossi and Judith Bickford Sassorossi ’74 are so busy they were reduced to writing a note to Bates while in the car. They report that older daughter Katie is a sophomore at Haverford, and younger daughter Martha is a freshman in high school…. Johanna Smith Bazzolo teaches biology and aquatic ecology at Regional District 8 High School in Hebron, Conn…. After 17 years of doing daycare and wearing jeans and sneakers, Karen Sowpel Jacob has embarked on a new career. She works as a travel agent and enjoys various cruises in the process. She’s one essay away from having her master’s. She’s interested in setting up ecologically oriented cruises to appeal to science teachers. She still delivers newspapers so her children can get an education…. Ken Spalding has joined the staff of the grassroots conservation organization RESTORE: The North Woods as project coordinator. The organization is active in many environmental issues in Maine. His older son, Eric, is in his first year at the Hartford Art School, Univ. of Hartford. Wife Sue is a high school guidance counselor and director of guidance at Livermore Falls (Maine) High School…. Several years ago in Switzerland, Deborah Tompkins Murith moved from her job at Digital to the World Conservation Union, where she is responsible for publications. The agency tries to influence policy makers at the state level to include environmental considerations into their legal systems, and is complementary to World Wildlife Federation, which targets individuals for fund raising. She ran the documentation center for the World Conservation Congress in 2000. Husband Jean-Luc is busy with his small Italian specialty shop and runs a catering service as well. Son Wesley is in a two-year accelerated apprenticeship in civil engineering drafting and then will go on to school for engineering. Son Nathan has started computer studies at Federal Polytechnic Institute in Lausanne, one of two schools in Switzerland equivalent to MIT. She also has two younger children…. George Young says, “I’m still playing guitar, still sailing boats, and still living the Jimmy Buffett life! I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.” He recently received the Dr. Joseph S. Goldfarb award for his career of almost 20 years in the field of environmental and public health, an award he is very proud of…. Junko Yuta Shiraishi enjoys a peaceful, happy life in Tokyo. Her two daughters are grown and each lives in her own apartment. In May and June 2001 she and Akira drove from Maine to California.
