Next Reunion in 1998. For Richard ’64 and Susan Armstrong Cox, 1994 and 1995 were eventful years. Sons Jeffrey and David were married, son Matthew graduated from Bentley College, and Dick and Sue celebrated their thirtieth anniversary on a Caribbean cruise. Sue works at Paine Webber while Dick’s own insurance business is right around the corner. Sue has a passion for classical music and wild birds, and enjoys swimming, gardening, church choir, and early morning walks around the cranberry bog. They have three extra bedrooms if anyone wants to visit Cape Cod!…Sandra Doubleday DeCosta and her minister husband, Joe, keep very busy with their church in Malden, Massachusetts. “Sandy” still teaches. Both children are grown and on their own. She recently vacationed with their son at the Grand Canyon…. Enjoying life at a somewhat slower pace,Joan Duarte Ohrn also lives on Cape Cod and loves her job teaching English as a Second Language. Grandchildren keep her busy and it is back to peace and quiet when Andrew and Brook leave. She wonders how she coped with six at home all at once!…Ed still keeps Sharon Fowler Kenrick hopping in his office practice. She has been very much involved with Metrowest Child Watch, a children’s advocate organization program she helped found. Sharon and Ed continue to enjoy golf…. Rae Harper Garcelon does a lot of traveling in her new position with major gifts for the Campaign for Bates and reports it is going very well. Rae has been in touch with David Rushforth, Bruce Alexander, the Scofields, Jean and Ed Wilson, John Follett, and Grant Lewis; she is recruiting more bodies for our next Reunion. Thanks, Rae…. Living in New Hampshire, social worker Judith Hindley Guider has seen some Batesie people. Both of her sons are in Japan, employed by the Japanese as English teachers. The Guiders enjoy skiing and gardening…. Sally Larson Carignan writes that their lives have changed completely with Jim‘s heart transplant. They are able to do things now they haven’t in years, such as travel. Daughter Sarah graduated from Bates this year (Editor’s note: Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, with honors in psychology), and one of their sons has made them grandparents for the first time…. Enjoying good health, Alex and Emily Leadbetter Althausen live in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where she volunteers in the town and also at the Fine Arts Museum in Boston. She feels that those years of Cultural Heritage at Bates have been a wonderful base for new learning experiences. She joins many of us who are now caretakers of parents in various degrees…. As a step toward retirement, Kathy Marshall Stricker bought property in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where she has vacationed. She teaches literacy classes, is the youth coordinator of her church, sings alto in the church choir, and does deep-water aerobics to fill her extra time. Her daughter is captain of her rugby team, served in Florida on hurricane reconstruction, and prepares for a teaching career…. Carl G. “Pete” Peterson has taught math and coached cross-country at Glastonbury (Connecticut) High School for thirty-three years. His older son, Carl, and his wife have made Pete a grandfather. The grandson’s name is Colby — how could they? Daughter Lynn teaches in New Hampshire. Carl’s new young second family includes two boys and a girl…. During a week in Rome, Judy Rubin Cadorette said they were almost carjacked, mugged, “scammed,” and caught in the subway door, but had a wonderful time anyway. She continues to be a math consultant for Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., and traveled around the Northeast doing in-service workshops in elementary schools…. Peter Schuylerwrites, “Nothing too earthshaking. No more kids at home — the last one left to be an electrical engineer in Oregon, but her `stuff’ stayed. I’m still running my engineering consulting company.”…At Edward Little High School, Dennis Sweetseris in his twenty-fifth year of teaching chemistry and has been head of the science department for three years. He also coached Little League baseball for twenty-nine years, and recently welcomed a grandchild…. Now down to one job — her own private practice — Lyn Webber Nelson resigned as support group coordinator at the Women’s Resource Center in Summit, New Jersey. Joining Flicka, the dog in their house, are Lyn, Gus, and Gus’s dad. Lyn’s son and daughter are off on their own. New adventures for the Nelsons include a terrific windjammer cruise, and golf school in Vermont, where they have bought a new house. It is reported to better accommodate “the aging process,” with an oil burner instead of woodstove, beds replacing bunks. Sue and Dick Coxvisited them and agree it’s a great retreat…. Carol Williams Jackson tells of more active involvement with their parents and increasing responsibility for them. Hers are well and active and live in Hilton Head. She and Dan still enjoy life in Atlanta…. Kim Worden still works for health promotion and research at the University of Vermont. Marianne (Bickford) is a librarian, son Tom is married and a teacher, daughter Ellen is a high-school junior. Kim and “Bicky” really enjoy first-time grandparenthood with Zachary born in November 1994 to daughter Laurie, who works for a magazine. |

Next Reunion in 1997. Stephen B. Goddard has been named the outstanding trustee of 1995 by the Association of Connecticut Library Boards. He has served as president of the Hartford board since 1991. Steve has also chaired the library’s Second Century Fund. Partner in Goddard & Blair law firm in Hartford, he previously served as counsel for the General Assembly’s development committee…. Anna (Poehler) andAl Schmierer have begun farming operations as Christmas-tree growers. They both continue in the art field — Anna as a painter and ceramist, Al as a photographer. His work will be featured in an exhibition at the Salt Lake City (Utah) Art Center in January 1996. |

Brooks was one of four to receive a Massey Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill last April. “Ned,” as associate vice-chancellor, assists the vice-chancellor in coordinating activities in the Division of Health Affairs. He also conducts his own research in health manpower, rural health-services delivery, health and social services for children, health promotion, and disease prevention…. Jane Downing is now program consultant for the Pittsburgh Foundation. She ended her term in June as an alumna Trustee and left her former position with the Pittsburgh Planning Department…. Dr. Richard Hillman will begin his third Fulbright Scholarship next January for a semester at Central University in Venezuela. Chairman of the political science Department of Foster College, Dick will help the University with its graduate program in international studies, teach a course in American government, and conduct follow-up research on his book,Democracy for the Privileged…. Congratulations to Judith Magyar Isaacson, who received an honorary L.H.D. degree from Colby College in May. Her book, Seed of Sarah, has been made into a forty-minute opera that premiered at the Portland Museum of Art in April. Kari Mashos, the founder ofSimply Opera, a fledgling opera company based in Cape Neddick, produced the opera. A professional singer, she was the show’s only performer. Composer Frank Polishook wrote the music, which was supplemented by the addition of historical film footage, the pre-recorded voice of Judith reading from the book, and graphic design. |

Next Reunion in 1996. From Kamuela, Hawaii, Mollie Anderson Sperry tells of a “transition year” for them. She has a new job as dean of students and faculty at LeJardin Academy, a 415-student, pre-school, elementary, middle school on the windward side of Oahu. Husband Dick will hold down the fort on Big Island. For the first time since her JYA at Bates, Molly went to Europe with daughter Malia, a graduate of Colorado College, to travel and attend a conference on Moral and Ethical Education. Molly adds, “What a blessing to greet fifty, experiencing adventure and anticipating pleasant challenges.”…Don and Karen Gulbrandsen Bean thrive in Bethel, Maine, where Karen loves teaching seventh-grade language arts. Don continues his craftsmanship in renovating and building, and they harvest sap for maple syrup. Sounds ideal and bucolic! Karen also taught a graduate class for the University of New Hampshire College of Lifelong Learning, titled “Using Children’s Literature to Teach Science.”…Geoff Boyer continues to be the father of the youngest bobkitten in the class. Julia (whom Wanda spends her time chasing) is about a year old and Scott is now about three. The other end of the offspring spectrum finds Geoff, Jr., recently returned from Norway where he was a Rotary exchange student, off to Ithaca College. Daughter Jen, a junior in high school, aims toward college with a focus on art education. She enjoyed a visit with her brother while he was in Norway…. Living in Clemson, South Carolina, Marty Braman Duckenfield avoids cold winters. She had a fabulous trip to England where she presented a workshop to the British Petroleum International Tutoring and Mentoring Conference. The trip was even more memorable because of visits to spouse Chris’s family, and with Patricia Howard and Ian Ewing, old friends from JYA days at Manchester College, Oxford. It made her think of classmates Kathy Koch Smyth, Ann Warren Turner, and Kathy Kelley Firth, who were there also that year…. Liz Clark Barrington is a development officer and works for the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls, a not-for-profit fund within the Long Island Community Foundation in Jericho, New York. She would be happy to chat with any classmates at 516-681-5156. She and husband Leo spend three weeks in Rome and Florence…. Marian Clough Hillsdon was honored recently by a promotion to clinical specialist II, an honor reserved for those who are two years post-master’s degree. She is also an ordained elder in her Presbyterian Church. Marion expects to receive her M.Ed. degree in June 1996…. Still flying for American Airlines,Greg Egner lives out in the country about an hour north of Dallas/Fort Worth in Sanger, Texas. Daughter Sara is a junior in high school, making plans for college…. At LTD Resources, Susan Francis Coiner continues her inspired work on her idea, which aims to place those with long-term disabilities back into the workplace as temps within the limits of their energy level. She also continues her pioneering work on the Americans with Disabilities Act. She is proud that nieceAbigail Francis is a member of the Class of 1999, the tenth family member to graduate from Bates. It all started with her grandparents, Horace and Elsie Lowe Turner ’11…. Cynthia Goodwin Riley, after whom the spring flower “Hi ya Cynth” was named, is still the library media specialist at Somersworth (New Hampshire) High School. Son Thomas graduated from Kents Hill School in Readfield, Maine. In the great traveling Class of ’67 tradition, the Rileys enjoyed a ferry journey from Portsmouth, England, to Caen, Normandy, for the commemoration of the great invasion that happened “just as our own class members’ lives were beginning.”…Vice-president for Earth Tech, John Hanisch is responsible for marketing air-quality services nationally at the 1700-person environmental consulting firm with forty offices. A nationally recognized expert in the 1990 Clean Air Act, he helps clients with training, permits, and compliance issues. Son John, a sophomore at Needham High, plays JV soccer; Michael is in middle school. Bonnie Hanisch is vice-president of Benefit Services and a part owner of McIntyre, Fay & Thayer…. Also working at Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., Joanne Healy is manager of an IS department. She reports that she works, manages a home, and tries to stay fit and keep up with the second- and third-grade homework of Olga and Zhenya, “my new children.” Recently she saw Hettie Hartman Harris’68…. David Howe writes with a smile that the visits from his two three-year-old grandchildren brighten their lives and “…destroy the house.” The kids give David and Sally new excuses to explore such places as children’s museums, train rides, and parks. David adds with wisdom, “We all need opportunities to enjoy the wonders of life.”…Last summerSuzanne Johnson Nixon visited the campus while home on holiday from England — very much impressed with all the changes, especially the Olin Arts Center. After “a twenty-seven-year hiatus” she is happy to reestablish contact. Suzanne lives in Berkhamsted near London with husband Bruce, Hannah, eleven, and George, nine…. Dick Kilbourne, your “former” Class Secretary is happily ensconced at Bates. Daughter Kristin, after a great spring rowing for the Bates Crew, will spend the first semester of her junior year in Aix-en-Provence, France, while daughter Cindy starts her high-school senior year in Connecticut. She is the proud driver of a recently restored 1969 MGB that she helped her dad do as a junior year project. Ellie Master Kilbourne ’69 holds the family together as Dick commutes to a Lewiston apartment for the week and home again on weekends…. In Reading, Massachusetts, John Ladik is performing system analysis and modeling for JASL. John III is a junior at Johnson and Wales University, and Julie is a sophomore at Lawrence Academy. John and Joan have retired from coaching soccer, and have discovered something nearly forgotten — free time!…In Portland’s Old Port, Lee Morse Edwards keeps the Wrong Brothers Pub & Restaurant a busy place. They host original music competitions that offer lots for the customers to see, hear, and do. Judging from a recent Saturday night in the Old Port, Portland is very much an alive and vibrant place. People actually were lined up on the sidewalks waiting to get into fun-looking watering holes!…”AGAIN” — Shirley Murphy Mongillo emphasizes their move once more. Her husband, Tony, became vice-president at Dell Computer in Austin, Texas. Life is all new for Shirley: new house, new schools, new neighbors, new friends…. Rick Powers sends two great bits of news: Another great tradition continues with son Greg being accepted at Bates. He will bring great football skills from Holderness, where he is accustomed to winning. Also, Rick has been promoted to president of the Personal Products Division of Rickett & Coleman, Inc. “All is well.”…In Florence, South Carolina, Bill Ramsey teaches college English at Francis Marion University, where he also writes and publishes haiku poetry. Bill frequently visits the Meher Baba Spiritual Center in Myrtle Beach; he has completed two pilgrimages to India, and is planning a third…. As principal of the R.J. Grey Junior High School, Mac Reid faces the challenge of moving more toward a middle-school philosophy, competing for students and finances with the new charter schools, and handling a growing student population.
