Among her notable qualities, “are her curiosity, intelligence, depth of knowledge, and incredible work ethic. Her enthusiasm for teaching is obvious to her students and infectious among her colleagues at Lake Street School. That she integrates her classwork with weekly singalongs only makes it all the more fun to be in her class… She certainly has the gratitude and appreciation of hundreds of students and their families for taking her gift for education and sharing.”

He is corporate counsel to the Downeast Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors and Maine Builders &;Remodeler Assn., for whom he is treasurer of the county chapter. He also serves on the board of the Good Shepherd Food Bank and is a corporator of the Auburn Public library. A cum laude graduate of University of Maine School of Law, he earned a master’s from the New School for Social Research. David and his wife,Brenda Garrand ’79, have a son, Charles Pierson.

Tap out a note tomagazine@bates.edu Mike Attinson has been living in Israel for 27 years. After graduation from Bates, Mike went right to Israel for a one-year volunteer program. When the Yom Kippur war broke out at the end of that year, Mike decided to remain and join the Israeli Army. He has lived in Israel since then, is now happily married to Hanna, an Israeli native. They have a daughter, Sharon, 16, and son, Tom, 10. Mike is a senior administrative officer at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. John Zakian (jzakian@nbedc.org) writes: “I am now officially a New Englander, becoming the first executive director of the New Bedford Economic Development Council, the economic and job development non-profit corporation for the city of New Bedford, Mass. I have now been in the job for 15 months, and it is not clear whether the city is still having difficulty adjusting to a life-long New Yorker or vice versa, but we seem to be getting along fine.”

In Durham, N.C., Peter Burch is in his 17th year as a psychologist on an inpatient psychiatric ward for children at a state hospital. He also has been in 20 years of private practice there, enduring the changes imposed by managed care….Chuck Gaputis says, “nothing new, nothing changed. In a mid-life rut.”… Newly single after 22 years of marriage, Mary P. Griffin is back in school working on her second master’s, this time for school counseling. She enjoyed two years as a full-time professional dancer with Ram Island Dance in Portland, still teaches dance part time, and danced at the Bates Modern Dance reunion in March. Her two children, Kyle (12) and Emma (9), are wonderful: “both great students, dancers, unicyclists performers, people.”… Marshall Hansen, Carla, and their two children enjoy being back in the U.S. after nine years overseas with the Navy. He is assigned with the U.S. Coast Guard this year in good ol’ Boston! “We love New England and are quite happy getting re-acquainted with the U.S.” On the Bates campus for the first time in 20 years, Marshall saw Don Osier, counseling at UMaine, Randy Erb, on the staff at Maine Maritime Academy, and Roger Bennatti, who coaches at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill…. In Montpelier, Vt., Kathie Hickman works at Washington Central Supervisory Union…. Ralph and Karen Sowpel Jacob have survived 25 years of marriage, celebrating with a New Year’s Eve cruise in the Caribbean with their daughters. “One scary thing, though, we have two teenage drivers in the family now.” Karen continues, “I am in my second year of playing ice hockey for a women’s team, Mother Ducks. I also still play catcher in a slo-pitch softball league. I am learning to be a travel agent for a company specializing in cruises, hoping to phase out my daycare of 15 years and change to before- and after-school care and a summer program for older kids. Ralph went to San Diego to give a talk at a diabetes conference last summer…. Thomas Konjoyan is an emergency physician at the Schumacher Group and EMCare in Nederland, Texas. Working hard on his pool game, he has been successful in several local tournaments…. Kaylee Masury(kmasury@yahoo.com) continues to work at Macy’s in Newington, N.H. Holly is at Emerson and loves it and will spend winter semester in the Netherlands. Kaylee plans to take her on a long weekend to show her where she spent short term in Germany. Kaylee also has a studio in her house and has started painting again. She is working on a series on the Isle of Shoals. She would love to hear from fellow Den rats…. Enjoying retirement, Dorrie Mitchell spends a lot more time with community theater. She and Dana were in the cast of Macbeth, the Suffield Players’ 100th production. They are singing and dancing in the spring production of Cole, based on Cole Porter’s life. “Our ballroom dancing lessons are paying off as we are featured in the songs ‘Night and Day’ and ‘Begin the Beguine’ in ths production.”… During the winter Bev Nash Esson worked part time as a mountain host at Bretton Woods Ski Area in N.H…. Don Osier began a new job doing career counseling as part of a Title IV program at UMaine-Farmington. He finished a year’s term as president of the board of a natural foods cooperative in Damariscotta, during which they moved and expanded their retail store to triple its former size. “And I have been doing lots of dancing – taking ballroom, swing, and Latin dance classes, and contra dancing almost every Saturday night. All in all, life is good.” … Tom Peters (tpeters@gris.grad.uconn.edu) writes: I’m in my 21st year at UConn and was promoted this past summer to assistant dean for graduate student affairs and records. My wife, Sharen, and I now live in Mansfield in a house we designed ourselves. Construction was completed in May 1998.”… Rick Porter is senior notes administrator at Guy Carpenter &;Co. in the World Trade Center, a position created for him so they could keep him. He is also trained as a Right FAX administrator. He has been doing a bit of home improvement, redoing the front entrance. Son Kyle (11) continues with travel soccer and last May he played flute with the Queens All-Borough Band at Carnegie Hall. Son Jeffrey (7) has begun harp lessons and planned to take summer tennis lessons. Wife Margie contiues her heavy involvement with the boys’ school, is vice president of PTA, and is a member of the committee that decides curriculum and policy for the school…. After 11 years as media relations counselor in San Francisco State University’s Office of Public Affairs, Rol Risska joined the university’s development office as a prospect researcher and development writer. Through his funding proposal, SFSU brought the city’s first poet laureate, Lawrence Ferlingetti, to campus for a poetry reading and book signing. Last summer Rol rented a flat in Rome with a group of friends, then went to Venice and the mountain lakes region. He continues to study Italian at City College of San Francisco…. In Brunswick,Christine Terp Madsen is a software engineer for a Baltimore company. Her partner, also named Chris, is the executive director of the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project in Auburn. Among its founders are classmates Deb Hibbard and Mary Ruchinskas. She and Chris adopted son Nathan in July 1998 (“and I am ashamed to say that my son attends the child care center at Bowdoin!”)…. Humberto Torrescontinues to work at a large textile company in Brazil, where he is one of the company’s directors in charge of knitting, embroidery, dyeing, finishing, printing, and all the processes involved in producing knitted fabrics for production of polo shirts, underwear, shorts, and pullovers. He’s been with the company since he returned to Brazil in 1977. Last June he planned to travel to Europe to attend the International Textile Machinery Exhibit in Paris and visit some factories in Germany and Italy. He couldn’t attend Reunion in 1988 because of conflicts with children’s school dates and business appointments…. Sandie Webb-Peabody has added a secondary career to her insurance agency. For the past 10 years she has taught skiing at Mount Sunapee, N.H. As of last March she is a PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America), Certified Level 2 Alpine Ski Instructor. Any skiers in the vicinity next November, come by and say “hello.”… Junko Yuta Shiraishi says, ” My daughters are teaching me how to use this computer and I’m learning. It’s highly possible that we will not cook in garbage cans again, however, as we have determined that the College now uses Rubbermaid rather than galvanized. Cindy also is known for her Sunday Sun Journal reports on the delectable offerings of area restaurants…. Congratulations to Russ Peotter, director of marketing and development at Maine PBS, who was recently honored as Communications Professional of the Year by the National Public Broadcasting Service. Selected from more than 349 member stations in the U.S., Russ has been at Maine PBC since 1973. He was chosen for being the marketing force behind new communications, such as digital TV. In 1994 he received the Elmo Award for the Maine Early Childhood Project and a 1990 New England Emmy as executive producer of the station’s “Made in Maine” series…. The Farthest North Alumni Club is getting organized under the enthusiastic leadership of Marty Welbourn who lives in Anchorage.

Completed a master’s degree in nursing at the Yale School of Nursing and am now employed part time as a pediatric nurse practitioner in an energetic pediatric practice in Glastonbury, Conn. Husband Lou and I are more than busy raising our seven children. All are now in school for the first time, however, with the oldest a senior in high school and the youngest (5-year-old twins) attending kindergarten.”
