Before she returned home to Venice, Fla., Verna spent three days in Arlington, Va., with Barbara and husband Paul…. Last Christmas, Bob Butler spent the holidays in Westport, Conn., with son “Skip” and Judy Mosman Butler, both ’63. They were joined by daughter Betsy ’67 and her husband Al, while grandson Rob ’88, his wife, and their young son came from State College, Pa…. Ruth Carter Zervas had a nice week’s visit with Verna Kirby in March 1998 after visiting in Sebring, Fla. Pat Abbott MacNamee joined them for a day, coming over from Port Charlotte…. While Bernard Drew, who is unable to travel, stayed in the Avery Nursing Home, Hartford, wife Gladys flew to Berkeley, Calif., where she visited son Rob, wife Janise, and shared a second birthday with grandson Thomas…. Last summer Evelyn Farnham Hersey was honored by the town of Pittsfield for her years of service in making it a better place to live…. Also honored, Helen Goodwin Yeagle received the Millie Hershall Award as the Oxford (Mass.) Woman of the Year for her generosity and volunteer work, donating her time and musical ability as choir director and singer in several area churches and working in a group that assists veterans…. We were sorry to learn of the death of Ruth Johnson Thomsen‘s husband, Elwyn, who was such a good friend of our class…. Since the death of his wife, Florris, in August 1998, Rob Johnston lives with daughter Florris and husband Frank Bly in Bradenton, Fla….Ed Lelyveld enjoyed the 1998 Northern California Bates Club meeting in Palo Alto when President and Mrs. Harward were guests…. Last November 6, Doris Neilson Whipplegave a 90th birthday party for Paul Emery, husband of our late classmate Dorothy Sweeney Emery. Among the 23 people there were Paul’s children from Chicago, Atlanta, and Knoxville…. Last year Donald M. Smith traveled with a cousin to visit old acquaintances and old familiar places in New Hampshire and Vermont…. This past December and early January Betty Saunders Smith visited in Colorado with son Jim in Denver and daughter Carol in Castle Rock…. Toby Zahn Griffiths received the Oxford County Award at the Retired Teachers State Convention. She is chairman of the County Legislative Committee and is active on the committee for the 200th anniversary of Otisfield. She and Larry spent three weeks in Florida last year and have visited relatives in Toronto twice.

Tap out a note to magazine@bates.eduEllen Bailey Fryling spent three marvelous months in Portugal last November and recommends the trip to everyone. Thanksgiving in Stowe, Vt., was perfect. At home she does her usual concertizing and enjoys her family…. Antoinette Bates Brown says, “Hello, again.” Her family is her great joy with grandchildren doing well: travel-study in China, graduate school in medicine, dramatic arts and art. Toni continues to participate in community affairs, thanks to help with transportation. “Memories of our years at Bates are happy ones, indeed.”… Isaphene Dolloff Soule has moved. She has a beautiful garden outside her door and a swimming pool to use and enjoy. She still practices on her piano, attends church functions and is a member of a 20-year-old quilting group. At evening school, she completed a semester of American Sign Language, and mentions her interest in the Civil War and helpful resources at the Bath library…. Marge Fairbanks Durland‘s daughter, Jill Durland LoMonaco ’54, wrote that Marge is contented in the Peterborough (N.H.) nursing home where she has lived for over a year. “She is still the same dear, sweet, cheerful person she has always been, although she has only short-term memory.”… Ed Foote spent last Thanksgiving with daughter Marjorie, son-in-law Scott, and granddaughter Heather. Over Christmas he was in Lake Forest, Ill., with daughter Betsey and granddaughters Debbie and Jennifer. All three grandkids are college grads and working in New York…. Digging out her request for news from her “I’ll-get-to-this-when-I-find-time” file, Mary Ham Wood sends lots of news. Her busy life includes lots of duplicate bridge, volunteer work in the ER of the local hospital, and activities with friends. Her favorite trips included going to Canadian Rockies, Utah, and Mexico. She flew to Great Barrington, Mass., for Christmas to visit her daughter-in-law and great-grands, 2 and 4. A year ago she lost son David, we are sorry to report. In NovemberCharlotte Corning Wright ’38 visited her and they caught up on Bates friends and news…. Pauline Hanson Hansen spent Christmas with son Steve’s family. She sold the camp where she and Axel spent 21 happy summers since the family wasn’t interested in it. Grandson Scott was delighted to have her car. She attends church and Bible study classes, goes out to eat in local restaurants, does grocery shopping and finds catalog shopping easy and helpful…. Carol Jerard Barone still travels a lot when she isn’t playing bridge, attending concerts, or taking day trips with a travel club. In 1998 she went to Australia and New Zealand in January, to the DAR Continental Congress in April, and spent four days in Banff and Lake Louise during a trip to Whitefish, Mont., to visit daughter Linda. In September she and daughter Cynthia took a Mississippi River cruise – what a great way to celebrate an 84th birthday – on the American Queen! In February, Carol embarked for two weeks in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore. No wonder she “never gets bored.” She reports that Billie Hatch Randall is back in Maine…. Our ever diligent class agent, Edith Jordan Anderson, writes of a busy summer of ’98 with children, grandchildren, and “greats” coming and going. Christmas week they left for three months in Florida, stopping at Hilton Head, S.C., for the holiday with oldest daughter and her children and grandchildren…. Rather than spend three months in Florida during the winter as she and Lewis ’35 used to do, June Lovelace Griffin was in Naples, Fla., for a week, spent a week in Bradenton, then went on a cruise during February and March. Last October, she and son Richard went to England, rented a car and explored the Cotswolds, East Sussex, and the coast. As she has done before, June and son took the Eurostar train through the “Chunnel” to Brussels and met a friend there…. It’s good to hear from honorary classmate, Martha Mann. She is “totally content in my little old house between the sea and hills.” She had a great summer of ’98 sailing and enjoyed a happy wedding in July. She still volunteers in kindergarten and enjoys choir and piano lessons. Her household now includes a black Lab puppy to join yellow Lab Amy, two cockatiels, and three finches. After New Year’s she was to go to Colorado to welcome a new grandchild…. Marian and Frank Manningvisited a grandson at Bowdoin last fall, took in the Bates-Bowdoin football game, which they enjoyed in spite of the score, 49-14. We are sorry to report the death of the Mannings’ oldest daughter, Susan…. Our sympathy goes to Alice Miller Lake whose husband, Rex, died Nov. 26, 1998. Polly and Rex always enjoyed the years with the family at their Brettuns Pond camp. Polly has two sons, their spouses, and six grandchildren to sustain her now…. The summer of 1998 began for Charlie ’38 and Connie Redstone Smyth with his 60th Reunion and ended with a long cruise from Boston to Bar Harbor, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Newfoundland, and New Brunswick. In August they worked on the hospital fair in Wolfeboro, N.H., which they have done for several years. A granddaughter is on JYA in Ireland and a grandson is in a five-year M.D./Ph.D. program. This winter Charlie and Connie were occupied with their customary church work in Florida and look forward to the summer’s opportunities….Dorothy Staples Fredland is thrilled that grandson Blake will be a first-year student at Bates this fall. Blake is the son of Robert Fredland and grandson also of the late Roger Fredland…. We are sorry to share the news of Happy Walker Webber‘s death on March 6. After her belovedRandy‘s passing in April 1997, Happy had moved to her own studio apartment in the assisted living section of Schooner Estates Retirement Community in Auburn, where she enjoyed the many activities, visits from friends, her daughters, and occasionally a grown-up grandchild…. Dot Wheeler Holbrook says her life doesn’t change much with club meetings, committees, concerts, and lectures that are offered in abundance at Oberlin. She was back in Ocean Park for a few weeks in July and August with visits from “assorted relatives and friends.” She visited children in Chicago, Madison, Wis., and Victoria, B.C., also high points. The family celebrated together a granddaughter’s graduation from Oberlin in May – one of Dot’s reasons for “struggling with e-mail, though I am sure the computer and I will never be friends.”… Dave Whitehouse writes that he and Connie find travel becoming more difficult, although he tries to return to “God’s country” once a year, and with Our Beloved Leader, Don Gautier, took to the woods for a time and to “Spooner” Estates, where the Class of ’36 is well represented (Lew Davis and Iris Provost Samuelson) along with retired Bates profs and other Batesies…. Jerry Wilson Niedringhaus reports that Georgia McKenney Frothingham is in a nursing home at 850 E. Butler Rd., Mauldin,S.C. 29622. Jerry and her daughter went to New Jersey and New York City last May. Every July, she gets together with her brothers and sisters for a week of visiting at Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., walking the beach and eating seafood, a tradition for over 20 years…. Class secretaryRuth Rowe Wilson continues with the Bates Magazine job which she enjoys. Surviving the winter, anticipating the advent of spring and gardening, and visits from family all summer at Ocean Park are enough to keep her from being bored.

Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu A trip to Hawaii was the high spot of 1998 for Libby MacDonald Reed, who spent three weeks with daughter Ann, a nurse at the state hospital. She particularly enjoyed helping to care for the exotic birds that Ann raises on an acre of fenced-in land. “Each bird has a definite personality.” Libby also took a three-day cruise starting at Honolulu, stopping at Kauai, ending at Maui. At home she attends concerts and plays and is active in her church. With a new computer she has fun doing research. She always welcomes visitors who may be near Medford, Ore…. We offer sympathy to the families of Marjorie Buckand Fred Martin, both of whom died on Jan. 29, 1999.

The Browns returned in time to attend the memorial service forRuth Brown Balmuth at the Colgate Chapel on January 10…. We were sorry to learn that Marita Dick Stratton lost son Jim ’69 last May. She keeps fit with exercise class, is active on the VEIA board and was delighted with an 80th birthday party…. Jean Dickson Kelley’s friend, Bill Collins, is deeply involved with Masonic District Managers; their travels around Maine have included Maine Maritime Academy, Castine. In New Brunswick and Montgomery, Ala., they attended two weddings, one of which was that of a granddaughter who married an Air Force flyer… Roberta Holmes Hayes went to Turkey on a cruise along the Turquoise Coast from Antalya to Istanbul and spent a week in Paris. She is a secretary and treasurer and on the steering committee of three different groups – and does not even have a typewriter or a computer!… Dave Howe and son Burt ’72 visited Emerson Cummings, who lives in a nursing home in Old Orchard…. Bob ’40 and Barbara Kendall Ireland shared Christmas with the entire 20 members of their family….Roslyn MacNish and Lois Clark abandoned a trip to the Everglades as water was too high for bird watching. Instead they visited touristy things such as the Miami Metro Zoo, the Fairchild Gardens, and Port of Palm Beach to see the Australian-built replica of Lt. Cook’s ship, the Endeavor….Helen Martikainen attended an observance of the 53d anniversary of the United Nations and the 75th anniversary of the Chapel Hill branch of AAUW…. Lucy Morang Pinkerton continues to relish her spectacular Arizona mountains and the usually warm weather…. With their three children and two of five grandchildren, Lauraine and John Nash celebrated their 50th anniversary by going to the Oyster Catchers at the Hyatt Hotel, Tampa, Fla…. In Pembroke, N.H., Dave and Lucy Perry Thompson continue to be active in community and church where Lucy is organist and choir director. They both work in the food pantry with Don as coordinator, and they have been volunteers at Downeast Hospice for the last ten years…. Lois Philbrick Child is on the board of Friends of the Library and on the exhibit committee of the local museum. She hoped to visit for three weeks in Venezuela where son George’s second child was recently married. Then she is going to slow down!… Ruth andRay Renaud took a trip to Acapulco and went through the Panama Canal…. Now retired, Ruth Robbins Adamo and husband John also have retired as news correspondents for theLewiston Sun Journal. Rudy has written a history of Wilton….Esther Rowe Tallamy covered 29 states and two provinces in 1997. In 1998 she and her RV (“Tiger and Tigger”) attended the Loners of America rally at Christmas, Fla. On the way home, she visited Ev Copeland in Lake City. She also drove to a rally in Ohio of Escapees Chapter 3, of which she is a charter member and past president…. Mary and Dana Wallacecelebrated his 81st birthday with 29 members of the family at the Samoset in Rockport. Included were two babies, one a first great-grandchild. Dana sold a few of his first crop of oysters that had reached market size. The Wallaces traveled to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, visiting several oyster operations. They are happy that granddaughter Jessica Caronis a first-year student at Bates…. Norma Watkins Maynardtook a world cruise that began in Southampton, England. She saw, among other places, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, then through the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean to Malaysia, Da Nang along the coast of Vietnam, Australia, Fiji, and Honolulu. She is president of her residents assn…. Lee Whiston has finally retired though he still holds his discussion group and film series. Dot (Weeks) delivers meals-on-wheels, shares in an interfaith dialog group, is active in United Church Women and a wives’ book-discussion group…. John White has a new iris he plans to introduce in the year 2000.
