Son Jeffrey’s family includes a son and another baby on the way. Matthew, their youngest son, works for Merrill Lynch in Newark and keeps in close touch…. In May 1996, Gail Brann Hayden-Benner received her M.S. in adult education from Univ. of Southern Maine…. In Athens, Ohio, Richard Carlson has a new position on the faculty of Beacon School for multi-handicapped children. Their high school son and new daughter keep them busy. He and Dana visited the Tagliabues in Lewiston some time ago, and attended the Champlain Valley Folk Festival…. Rae Harper Garcelon and Allan Creighton still keep busy traveling. She started a new business, The Good Wife, that offers a variety of home management services to the elderly who live independently and to dual-career couples.She looked forward to Reunion and seeing Batesies now that she is no longer traveling for the College…. The Rev. Bruce Gray is rector of the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va…. Bruce and Katherine(Lowther ’60) welcomed a third grandchild this year…. Art Jenks writes that he and Barbara continue to enjoy the good life in Savannah, Ga. Between trips he serves on a few boards and has had a news broadcast on local public radio. “Carpe diem,” he says…. Living in Lincoln, Mass., Emily Leadbetter Althausen volunteers at the Lincoln Library and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Husband Alex has eight more years at Mass. General, and both daughter Anne and son Peter are in the medical field…. Kathy Marshall Stricker has retired from the CIA and moved to Hilton Head, S.C. She loves her low country cottage on a lagoon, near navigable water and the beach. Kathy keeps busy decorating her house, landscaping, walking the beach, tutoring in literacy, singing in the Choral Society. Daughter Vickey lives in the family homestead in Herndon, Va., and teaches there…. In June Sally Marshall Corngold headed to Boston for son’s graduation from Harvard. Older son is in law school. Sally still works as director of publications for Optometric Extension Program, keeps in touch with Sally Benson ’61, Sylvia Woodaman Pollock ’63, Carol Smith Robertson ’61 and looked forward to Reunion…. Both of Lorraine Otto Gloede‘s daughters went to James Madison Univ. She sees Bates friends often including Caroline Taber and Judy Rubin Cadorette. …Art Ridlon and roommate Pete Green take in several Portland Sea Dogs games together. He enjoys time at Prince Edward Island and reports that son Sam is working on his M.B.A. at Rollins College…. Judy Rubin Cadorette is a K-8 math consultant and teaches courses at UMass/Lowell and Framingham State College. Enjoying travel, she and Edmund look forward to a summer cruise in Norway with Caroline Taber…. Pete Schuyler still runs his engineering company, exploring possibilities in the Far East and former Soviet bloc. He expected to travel in July to Murmansk, Russia, and Norway and reports lots of red tape…. To celebrate their second anniversary, Alan and Joy Scott Meyer took a trip to France. Last October they were at Arlington Cemetery to attend the dedication of the new Women’s Memorial that honors women in the Armed Forces. They enjoy their grandsons and the prospect of a new granddaughter…. Harriet and Al Squitieri stop off at home once in a while to do laundry between trips: to San Francisco and Salt Lake City where they attended an unusual Rocky Mountain Festival. Now that he is retired, Al sends his wife to work, as a part-time freelance nurse between trips! They play golf and looked forward to Reunion…. For Dan and Carol Williams Jacksonthis was the “year of the wedding,” including that of daughter Laurie and other family weddings, as well. The Jacksons have taken up golf in earnest, and traveled to Maine, Florida, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Dick Andren formed a nature tour company and led hikes in Acadia National Park… While she works part time at two clinical social work jobs, Becky Beckwith Walshhas been working on her Ph.D. and carrying a full course load. In a fit of utter craziness she also agreed to serve on the search committee to select a new minister at her Unitarian church…. Bill Braman and wife Ellen, an accomplished equestrienne, acquired a new registered Paint Horse, a Tobiano with chestnut and white coloring named Sierra Son. Bill says, “Becoming a horse’s responsible person is quite a change, but one that has been rewarded by welcoming whinnies, beautiful rides in western New England, and a personal challenge to sharpen skills and really communicate with a 1,200-pound creature with a mind of his own.”… In Raleigh, N.C., Ginny Brodersen Holthausencontinues as the director of music at a small Presbyterian church. She also teaches seven piano students at home….Linda “Corky”Corkum Keeffe thoroughly enjoys her rural mountain lifestyle in Colorado. In her successful business, CC RAGZ, she makes custom Polartec clothing, mostly outerwear and casual things…. At the August wedding of Nancy Dillman Larson and John David, guests included several classmates as well as Grace and John Tagliabue. Nancy will retire after she finishes the year at Wallingford (Conn.) High Schoool, then will sell her home. She and John expect their new home to be located in southern New Hampshire, where he wants to work and continue his orchestra and community activities…. Victor and Marion Day Czaja went on a fabulous bird- watching trip in Costa Rica. “We stayed at Laguna de Lagarto up near the Nicaraguan border and saw green macaws, lots of toucans, warblers, tanagers and more!”… Nancy Day Walker and her husband are designing their tour of USA waterways. “We’ll live on a boat for at least a year, maybe longer. Our current house has just been put on the market and we are trying to divest ourselves of things! Nancy is closing out a 28-year teaching career, but may return to it while her husband closes down his business…. AlthoughElizabeth Dowd Rubino moved to Haverhill, Mass., she still teaches eighth grade in Lawrence…. Peripatetic Paula Downey Bacon crossed the country four times this past year, exploring from Vancouver to Carmel on the West Coast combining the business of creating a new tour and playing with grandchildren, before once again returning to Portugal. “After a dozen years, Cascais, on the Estoril coast, feels like a home away from home.”… After much mental hand- wringing,Eulalie “Lee” Drury is back in Anchorage. Unable to commit to a decade of breakups (not romantic, just “spring” in Anchorage), she decided she was really a New Englander and prepared to return there for the “Duration of her Days.” After a trip that renders pale even Odysseus’s return to Ithaca, she drove a total of 8,052 miles from Alaska to the Northeast to Atlanta, where she plunged into “the final summer of my master’s degree. Then, after deciding that my angst over not living near my daughters had more to do with my idea of motherhood than theirs, I sold the car and told a mover to pack up the storage unit. And while my furniture piggy-backed to Seattle and barged to Anchorage, I boarded the flight home.”… One traveling grandma, Pat Folsom, spent three weeks visiting friends in Petrozavodsk, Russia, then returned for her last year of teaching at Colchester (Vt.) Middle School. She has just taken on the presidency of United Methodist Women for Green Mountain District in Troy Conference…. Jonathan Ford is moving to California…. Diane Gallo DeFrancisci is selling her Long Island home, moving to Vero Beach, Fla., and husband Leonard is moving his company from Brooklyn to Melbourne. Diane was there last winter conducting a job search…. Paul Goodwin, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Univ. of Connecticut, is preparing for his annual Smithsonian junket to South America, where he will give lectures on everything from the culture of Buenos Aires to “Drake, Magellan and the Southern Passage.” The eighth edition of his textbook on Latin America, Global Studies: Latin America, appeared March…. Linda Gramatky Smith continues to help with the family business (Peaceable Kingdom Press is printing several Little Toot cards next Christmas). She is executive assistant to the CFO at Fortune Brands Inc., in a job she took as a “temp” in 1995. “It’s a great job, where I can use my �life experience’ � problem solving, hospitality, computer know-how, travel planning.” Recently, she was involved in the spin-off of the company’s U.K.-based Gallaher tobacco business…. On a trip to Ecuador to see their youngest daughter, Bob and Sally Smith Halliday are also going to the Galapagos. “Shades of biology classes at Bates when the Galapagos were discussed extensively. Well, we will finally see what they were talking about.”… Grandon andDorothy March Harris are in Wisconsin, where Dot continues to teach English and incorporates history and drama in her classes. Since all her students suspect that what she insists they learn might actually be useful, it is a great job. Gran manufactures architectural plywood, a pain to his soul since he takes personally the cutting of any tree…. Bill Haverspends most of his time on local, state, and national efforts to improve, reform, or energize math education at all levels. Bill invites any Bates alumni who enjoy fine Creole-Italian cooking and live jazz to stop in at his son’s Musselduck Restaurant, in Richmond, Va…. Jeff Hillieris still guidance counselor at Exeter Junior High, where “much of last year’s labor fury has cooled and we are completing a new building to accommodate the rising numbers. It’s exciting, but more than a little scary in such a politically charged atmosphere of lingering anger (teachers vs. school board vs. taxpayers).” When he gets the time, Jeff builds and repairs boats…. Ingrid Kaiser Muller has children in Sardinia, Boston, and at Bates, so she and her husband have been traveling quite a bit: Israel, Egypt, Alaska, Krakow, Prague. “So much to see in this world.”… Joyce Killay Patton had a great phone visit withRos Avery Fishbaugh. “What a great, low-key way to be reminded that a gift of money to Bates would be appreciated.” Joyce continues to be active in the Mercy Hospital Festival of Trees benefit every December…. Elizabeth Metz McNabfound wonderful bobcat puppets from Folkmania to give to family Bates grads last Christmas and they all had fun playing with them…. John Meyn sent a quote from his mid-80s aunt that encourages all us mid-50ers: “You don’t know how young you are when you are in your 50s.”…Still in Boxborough, Mass, Eric and Rhoda Morrill Silverberg say that their chances of going to Hawaii do not look very good. Eric’s “stress reliever” is building kayaks. He is now on his third (a single for Rhoda)…. On her birthday last June, Nancy Nichols Dixon celebrated by going snow skiing in 80-plus degree weather at Killington, Vt., a gift to herself and what an experience: a big bump run with the snow melting before her eyes, and snow fleas coming out in the heat of the sun. In the summer Nancy and Richard got back into biking and found that they enjoy mountain better than street biking. They do Rails to Trails paths and dirt roads…. Superbusy Anne Packard‘s semester ended less than a week before Christmas, grades were to be in after the winter semester started and Christmas was just a blur. She was in the last week of her winter ecology course and was analyzing zooplankton samples for the state of Maine and a local environmental consulting firm. Anne still energizes aerobic classes at 6 a.m. three days a week. “When I was 40 I wanted to be teaching aerobics when I hit 50. I guess I can try for 60?”… We are grateful to Lynn Parker Schiavi for all the work she did on the class letter for so many years. She has two grandchildren and they, plus Diocesan Youth Ministry, aquacize group and hospital auxiliary force her to stay organized. In January she and her husband headed back to Hawaii for two weeks of R&R together. “You just don’t tamper with a good thing,” Lynn says…. In 1997 Norma and Jonathan Peabody had a wonderful week on Maui during a business trip. They spent a lot of time last summer in Poland Spring, enjoying Thompson Lake. He had a couple of great fishing trips, one the upper Androscoggin River near Errol, N.H. “What a difference in the river now. It’s clean, clear, and has some nice fish in it. Remember what it smelled like 35 years ago?”… A truly intriguing note from Robert “Bob” Peek: He has moved his business, Peek Financial Services, to Andover, Mass, from Windham, N.H., where he had been since 1981. And Bob mentions that after graduating from Union Theological Seminary in 1978, he did not attend church for 27 years, but two years ago that all changed. “That is another story, but for now, let me just say that the last two years have been the most fulfilling of my life.”… Art Purinton‘s daughter Elizabethgraduated from Bates in May. She is the fourth generation for the family, quite a tradition. “Would you believe she’s working Sunday nights as a bartender at the Blue Goose? That’s where both her uncle and I were known to have an occasional beer. I didn’t even realize the Goose was still there!”… On her visit to the Cayman Islands, Esther Rosenthal Zewllweger writes, “Much as I love our New England, I do find that there is nothing like the sun and warm water, the salt air and the trade winds to rejuvenate in December.” An animal-rights activist, this past spring she traveled to several Southern cities, putting on conferences and in late May gave a talk in Bratislava in Eastern Europe…. While Patricia Saylor teaches at the middle school each day and works nights to complete her Ph.D. at Central Connecticut State, Rick Saylor takes an “early retirement” from his job as director at the Travelers to spend six months on Block Island, R.I., at an Orvis store specializing in fishing and kayaking. He frequently gets together with classmate Brian Langdon who has a house on the island…. Last November cardiologist John Schatz was featured in “Portofino Presents Three Bohemians and a French Toast,” the eighth annual poetry reading for Natividad Medical Center Foundation in Pacific Grove, Calif…. Greg Shea writes that a grandson arrived in June to join his sister (3). “Faxes, cell phones, e-mail have increased the pace of business and life, so much that slowing down and walking instead of running is rapidly gaining in appeal. Until our Reunion, be well, be happy, breathe deep, slay dragons, and do it today.”… Continuing to work diligently in the insurance world for Marsh & McLennan in the private client services division,Joanna Starr recently completed a second professional designation, associate in personal insurance, to help keep herself employable as “we all enter what may be the final decade of �earning a living.'”… A huge thank-you to Perry’63 and Gail Tupper Hayden for our class Web site! Gail and Perry have been busy. They participated in an Elderhostel in Provincetown, Cape Cod, last May. The whale watching, beachcombing, tidal flat exploration, and history lessons were great. She produced a second edition of the Henniker Rotary Club’s Outdoor Guide to the Only Henniker on Earth and distributed another 10,000 copies locally. Retail sales of their Golden Pineapple Shop are up 20 percent due to Beanie Babies. “The passion has been very good for business, but we have endured thousands of phone calls and as many compulsive shoppers!”… In September 1990, Scott Wilkinsleft the American Embassy in Helsinki, Finland. After a crash course in Spanish, he remained in Panama until November 1994. The four years in Latin America were busy ones. Aside from fascinating work, he had opportunities to travel extensively through Guatemala, Colombia, and Ecuador. After eight years out of the country, he returned to Washington and worked for the Center for Naval Analyses until his retirement from the Navy in July 1995. Scott now works for Autometric Inc., where he is a senior program manager working on 3D modeling and visualization for both government and commercial customers…. Alan and Sandy Prohl Williams are now in South Carolina, where Sandy teaches eighth-grade language arts at Camden Middle School. She hopes to make her “debut” with the Camden Community Theater this spring in their production of the classic You Can’t Take It with You. Alan’s part of Sonoco (Consumer Products/Composite Snack Containers) continues to be the fastest growing and the most profitable part of the company…. Val Wilson DuPuytemporarily lives in Scotia, N.Y., to be closer to her mother, who suffered two strokes. Val takes courses at Russell Sage but has not given up her plans to get a B.F.A. and a master’s degree so she can teach at the college level in the near future. Val hoped to be at Univ. New Mexico by August to begin a full-time schedule to achieve her goal. She also hoped to convince Linda Jarrett Taeger to fly into Albany and drive up with her to Reunion…. Bill Young is very busy helping the government and small businesses understand, adopt, and use electronic commerce. It is really interesting because things change every three to four months � literally…. Margaret “Gretchi” Ziegler concludes another stint as chair of the Division of Business Administration at Franklin Pierce College and will take an early retirement package. She will continue to teach half time, with no committee or advising responsibilities. And she continues to cheer on their women’s soccer team, national NCAA Division II champs for the fourth consecutive year.
