He chalks up their seven decades to “plain compatibility.” In the Dec. 17 RocklandCourier-Gazette the Lindseys reminisced about their romance that began when Walter taught science to his student, Erma. He thanks her for putting up with having had students running through the house over the years. The forever-young couple love to travel, dance, keep busy with hobbies, and enjoy their several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Included were grandchildren from Georgia and California, a great-grandson also from California, as well as son and daughter. Last year was the first summer that the Kirbys stayed in Florida instead of returning to their Maine home on the coast in Corea…. Bob Butler enjoyed several visits from relatives and friends last summer at his home on Vinalhaven Island…. In November, Ruth Carter Zervasvisited her son and family in Lansdowne, Pa. While spending time with friends in Takoma Park, Md., she had a guided evening tour of the West Wing of the White House…. Gladys and Bernard Drew are enthralled over the birth last Oct. 5 of their first great-grandchild, to Jeanise and Rob Drew. Gladys continues to admire Bernard’s portrait that hangs in Drew Hall in their Hartford (Conn.) church…. Evelyn Farnham Hersey had traveled extensively with husband Hugh until his death in 1987. She now goes with women friends, with her last tour to the Canadian Rockies. Evelyn is involved in her church, and is a 50-year member and a past grand officer of Eastern Star…. Every summer Verna Geddes Morison visits Maine with her sons and Doris Neilson Whipple. She enjoys hearing Dot play the piano and talking over old times…. The Ed Lelyvelds traveled from San Francisco to Lewiston last fall to visit the Maurice Shiffers, his brother-in-law and wife, who live at Russell Park Manor…. Instead of returning to Florida, Georgette Lepage decided to stay in Maine this past winter…. A year ago in January, Louise Mallinson Jagger went on a Caribbean cruise with her son, daughter-in-law, and a former teacher friend. That October she visited her sister-in-law in Thousand Palms, Calif. Because of the heavy snowfall Louise missed her two-to-three-mile walks until spring…. Doris McAllister holds offices in various organizations both in the state and the local Koussinoc chapter of DAR, Kennebec Valley Retired Teachers Assn., and Gamma chapter of Delta Kapppa Gamma…. Frank Murrayattended Urbana ’96 between Christmas and New Year’s…. Tom Musgrave summers in Brunswick and returned to Englewood, Fla., for his 26th year. He keeps in touch with Bates friends: the Kirbys, Ted Seamon, Donald Smith, and Sumner Raymond…. Last October Doris Neilson Whipple, with friends from Atlanta, traveled to Vermont, staying at the Woodstock Inn, then drove on to visit brother Bob and his wife in Quechee. She planned winter trips to Atlanta for Christmas and to Florida in February and March….. Even though Betty Saunders Smith lives in Kingfield with daughter Susan ’65, she continues to write a weekly column for her Millbrook (N.Y.) paper. Betty visits Abbott regularly at the nursing home in Farmington. She spent September with her veterinarian son in Ohio, enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren…. Last June, Donald M. Smith came back East to attend the burial service of his best and oldest friend, Clive Knowles ’33, which was held off the coast of Bar Harbor. On the way home, he visited Tom Musgrave for a couple of hours. Donald and Eda (Osano ’33), who is in a nursing home, have 14 great-grandchildren….Charles Whipple is involved in activities in Cherry Grove, N.Y., where he has a summer home. He is chaplain of the fire department, administrator of the dunes fund, and president of the civic and memorial funds.

Dorothy Kennedy Prince was among 16 volunteers who have completed hospice training for Androscoggin Home Health Services. The volunteers support terminally ill patients and their families in a core team that includes a medical director, nurses, home health aides, social workers, and clergy.

Dot Adler Bridges goes to the cardiac fitness center three times a week and enjoys rowing, biking, the treadmill, and aerobics. She also enjoys granddaughter Christie (9) and her single son who lives with her. Tending her house plants keeps her on her toes…. The Bob Akerses shared about five Christmases with different members of their family…. Bob and Ruth Brown Balmuth‘s 50th wedding anniversary party was one of the best of the year held in a new Grange Hall near Tacoma with their son, daughter, their spouses, children, and friends…. Ruth Butler reports a trip to England plus a delightful vacation at Cape Cod and a total knee replacement…. On their birding trip to the Antarctic, Evelyn Copelandand her friend, Mack, went ashore in rubber rafts wearing bright red parkas so they could be seen amidst the icebergs and the numerous penguins. Ev’s new book, Lonesome Glee, Tales from the Birding Trails, is published by Vantage Press…. From Old Orchard Beach, Emerson Cummings sends best wishes to all. In spite of poor sight, he is in good health and gets out almost every day. Active on the board of the Salvation Army, he was honored by the Town Council, which named the street where he taught school for 30 years theE. Emerson Cummings Boulevard… Alice and Bing Crosby were at Back-to-Bates last October. They live in a neat apartment in the Jupiter-Tequesta (Fla.) area, right across from the heated pool and putting green. Not bad!… Marita Dick Stratton‘s five sons have been a tremendous help and comfort following the death ofCharlie ’40. Last spring she planned to go to Virginia to help out when her son’s baby arrives, and to enjoy the other small fry — 4 and 7 — who are among 11 other grandchildren…. Leighton Dingley was sorry to miss the debate centennial celebration and his Edward Little High School 62nd reunion. He does not drive nights or to unknown areas due to glaucoma…. In the 16 years since he retired, David Howe has held 14 interim pastorates. He is now volunteer pastor of the Chapel of St. John of the Mountains in Ellsworth, a small New Hampshire community in the White Mountains…. Bob ’40 and Barb Kendall Ireland reported that their Ocean Park cottage was hit by the October northeaster, soaking bedding on the first floor, washing lawnmower inside and out, and floating away their woodpile. Granddaughter Hannah will be the 10th Ireland-Kendall clan member to go to Bates. In Vermont the Irelands have added to nearby cross country ski trails, maintained their loyalties to church, Art Center, hospital, and town…. Living in Wayzata, Minn., Trustee Emeritus Bob Kinney writes that the last of his seven grandchildren entered college this fall. The Kinneys have a new home in Bar Harbor, completed Christmas week in 1995, so they spent New Year’s Day ’96 there. Bob is pleased with developments at Bates, particularly the successful Bates Campaign…. Last September Ros MacNish and Lois Clarke HC’39 attended a photo conference in Tucson. They toured many national parks and monuments on a 33-day, 6,500-mile odyssey…. Helen Martikainen H’57 continues her very active life as a board member of the West Triangle Assn., United Nations-USA, and attended the 11th session of the Emerging Issues Forum at North Carolina State Univ. In February, she became chair of the Carol Woods Residents Health and Social Services Community where she lives…. Lois Philbrick Child says life has been busy with three family weddings this past year. She is on the board of the new library in Weston, Mass., and on the exhibits committee for the local museum. She enjoys especially the annual symphony concerts…. In Jacksonville, Fla., Virginia Pump is happy in an Episcopal retirement community. She taught for 20 years at the university in Puerto Rico, part time in New Jersey, and volunteered as secretary at the local Episcopal church in South Jersey, learning a new skill of word processing. Now she “buzzes people in and out” at one of the retirement residences…. Last summer, Ruth and Ray Renaud drove more than 2,000 miles with their second daughter and husband to a granddaughter’s graduation from St. Mary’s in South Bend, Ind. Later they visited another of their four daughters, and in June had a surprise 80th birthday party for Ray…. Enterprising author Robert Rimmer sent a flyer that says, “Most Rimmer’s readers thought he was dead except the 100,000 who purchased his four video tapes and 3,000 reviews of X-rated movies!”… John and Ruth Robbins Adamo have retired from newspaper work. She was Wilton’s reporter for the Lewiston Daily Sun for 34 years, the last 13 with Johnnie as a photographer. They are now “being lazy” and Ruth is trying to get a book together…. Esther Rowe Tallamy spent the winter at home on Long Island, but the open road calls. She plans to visit the six Western states she has missed, then will be off to the Southeast and Pacific Coast. Last year she helped organize a New York chapter of the Escapees RV Club and serves as chapter president….Dana Wallace is proud parent of three million baby oysters at Chance-Along Farm, an aquaculture operation with bags and cages stretched over Maquoit Bay. Chet and Smarty were impressed with the amount of work the whole operation entails when they were power boated to the area. Last August, Mary and Dana spent five weeks in Ireland, Wales, and England partly in hostels and partly visiting their many English relatives….Norma Watkins Maynard, now a great-grandmother, a Pakistani lady, continues to play bridge and is also a Sunday school teacher. She has done lots of traveling: London, Scandinavia, Panama Canal, and Misissippi River cruises…. En route to the Rockies and the Pacific area, Lee and Dot Weeks Whiston spent a few days with each of their four sons. Dot works in her church, with shut-ins, Meals-on-Wheels, and ministers’ wives. She is Lee’s primary caregiver…. John and Evelyn Jones White ’38 joined the Bates cruise to Acapulco through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean in February. Then it was home to plant 1,500 iris seeds. “Swimming as usual” is an understatement. At 80, John swims 40 laps five noons a week at the Bates Tarbell Pool. He holds national and New England records for his 50-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter back stroke in those events for his age group.
