Working, traveling, camping and spending time with family including their first granddaughter, Jules and Jacqueline Hughes Cote find their days full. They enjoyed their first Lions Club International Convention, which recognized his service to Lions…. After more than 36 years with Polaroid, most recently as senior vice president for new business develpment, Peter O. Kliem resigned in January to help start NOVIRx Inc., a company in pharmaceutical drug discovery that uses rational drug design based on structure. First priority for Peter is seeking capital to begin operations, and Peter is working with venture capital groups. As funding becomes available, Peter will serve as chairman and CEO. The focus of NOVIRx will be on antiviral therapies.

In Portland, the newly renovated Merrill Auditorium at City Hall (formerly City Hall Auditorium) was opened to the public recently. The Kotzschmar Organ was also renovated and installed after more than a two-year wait. Steve Garvin, a member of the advisory board of the Kotzschmar Organ, was one of six guest performers for the grand opening in April. Steve, a vice president at People’s Heritage Bank, played “Entree” by Dubois….

Dick Glover writes about traveling all over the country and other countries in an RV. The Glovers spent five weeks traveling along the East Coast to Florida and then went on to Texas. After a spell at home, they plan to spend a month touring seven countries of western Europe…. Priscilla Hjelm Sylvia is a grandmother! Son Carl and his wife Jamie announce the arrival of a son; the happy family lives in Hailey, Idaho…. After serving as a Baptist pastor for 31 years, Bill Nash has retired. He and wife Marilyn spend their winters in St. Petersburg, Fla., and summers in New Harbor…. Carol Sisson Vose and husband Bill have been preparing his mother’s manuscript for publication. It is a fictionalized autobiography of her teenage years living at the court of Czar Nicholas in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time of the Russian Revolution, she and her father had to leave town. She is now 92…. At Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, President and Dean Robert Viles is pleased that U.S. News & World Report ranked New Hampshire’s only law school first in the nation in intellectual property law. He credits the ranking to the addition of a master of laws program in intellectual property. The survey focused on the quality of programs — not just their reputation in the field — and the school’s efforts to publicize its program.

Lyn Webber Nelson and her sister, Merry Webber Stockwell ’65, organized an “experiential weekend of assessing and sharing our emotional, spiritual and creative self.” The meetings in March provided opportunities to experiment with different ways of being — some in solitude, some in community — to connect to other women and reconnect to oneself. Lyn is a marriage counselor and family therapist at Faith Counseling Center, Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence, N.J. Merry is director of religious education at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Keene, N.H.

Curtiss played a key role in the production and marketing of the agency’s handsomely designed Chartered Courses: A Cook’s Tour of Shoreline Kitchens, a collection of traditional and contemporary recipes that reflect “the casual sophistication of coastal New England.”

Becky Beckwith Walsh‘s daughter Lauren ’89 graduated from Willamette College School of Law and married a fellow graduate, Scott Nemeth, a week later. Becky’s multidisciplinary outpatient pain-management program has grown to the point where she can give up administrative duties and become clinical coordinator, concentrating on treating patients. She also consults on a research project for Johns Hopkins School of Public Health…. Stephen Barron played last year at Timberland Golf Course and sawChuck Lasher, who is the assistant pro. Stephen’s three daughters are now successes in their own lives and the Barrons are proud grandparents of Caihlan and Teagan. “Before our sons-in-law, the only other male in our household was ‘Red,’ Jackie’s horse, a gelding. Was I nervous? Professional status: still practicing law (29 years). I’m getting good — no thoughts of retirement.”… Don Blumenthal has completed 32 years at Quinnipiac College where he’s the senior associate dean of students. His oldest son, Steven, is getting married this summer…. Classmates saw Norman Bowie mentioned in The New York Times about what he calls “a wonderful sabbatical year at Harvard in the Program in Ethics and the Professions.” Son Brian is a pilot with TWA Express. Son Peter is finishing his third year of vet school at the Univ. of Minnesota…. After 13 years in Pennsylvania, Bill Braman writes that he and Ellen Endter are “moving back to Longmeadow, Mass., where Ellen does fund raising for Amherst College. We are in the process of restoring a 1929 English cottage. It has been a joyful and frustrating process. Although our painter and carpenter have now become part of the family, we did not think it proper to declare them as dependents on our 1040s.” Bill is now in his third year consulting on new business start-ups, marketing, and distribution management, primarily in the property-casualty insurance field…. Linda Browning Griffin‘s news from ’96 is great: “Bill is well! Literally on the day of his birthday last April, his doctor told him he was cured of his central nervous system lymphoma. We both hold our breath at each checkup, and that reflex will continue for years, but we both are smiling a lot these days.” The Griffins and daughter Ashley continue to do well…. Dave Campbell is in his fourth year as a sixth-grade teacher in California. “Many teachers in my age group are making plans to retire. Not being ready for that step but wanting to have a plan should the rigors of teaching middle-school kids grow too great, I’m looking at alternative ways to use my skills, perhaps as a speech therapist.”… Linda “Corky” Keeffe is enjoying being a “mountain woman. The roads are dirt and the view of the backside of Pikes Peak, Aspen Groves, and Mountain Meadows. The atmosphere is totally rural. My polar fleece business goes well. UPS delivers my Polartec to the door, and I then spend my time in my ‘factory’ making clothing under the label CCRAGZ.”…John David‘s son John ’96 is working for an audio systems company in Cambridge. “Kate has returned from her experiment in starvation (San Francisco) and will go to an excellent art school, Corcoran Institute, in Washington, D.C. I’m thrilled with my job at Tektronix and orchestra and occasional playing in church help keep me sane, if I am sane.”… Marion Day Czaja wrote from Huntsville, Texas: “Enjoying my third year as an ‘absent-minded professor’ and being near enough to birders’ haven, High Island. April is spent with binoculars glued to my face. Any birders in the bunch — come help me out!”… Nancy Day Walker reports: “My husband and I are retiring to the North Carolina coast — on a 36-foot sailboat mostly — and a house in Wilmington where we’ll celebrate holidays with family. I have a wonderful teaching position at the Children’s Psychiatric Institute, where I am rewarded by seeing kids learn that they can learn. What a joy!”… Paula Downey Bacon writes: “I am packing my bags for Portugal, where I have taken groups for a dozen years. I think that this will be the last year, however. My next business will be buying art pottery and early 20th-century wooden furniture and shipping it to the West Coast. Perhaps I will do both tours and ‘modern’ antiques for a few years. Returning to Maine, Bates, and/or the slopes is good for the soul.”… Eulalie Drury has been busy in Alaska: “I cross country skied, viewed critically acclaimed films at the Capri, noshed at the Bagel Factory, attended Polar Bear Jump-Off weekend in Seward, and the start of the Iditarod in Anchorage, met authors at Borders, spent a raucous evening at the Fly-By-Night Club (where I was the evening’s first runner to the King of the Minor Celebrities), haunted stacks at the Loussac library, and took a terrifying tram ride up Mount Alyeska. Between substitute teaching assignments, I continue to temp. I enjoy meeting new people with each job, and it is still an event to gaze out the workplace window to see moose munching on trees or Mount McKinley materializing on the horizon. Although my children, friends, brothers, and sister-in-law are a continent away and I miss them, I feel good about what I’m doing.”… In 1996, Judy Ellinwood Leddy wrote: “I am juggling a stressful job as team leader at a community mental-health center with single-parenting responsibilities. I participated in an American Baptist Church-sponsored mission work tour to the Dominican Republic. We worked with Haitian immigrants who are building an outpatient clinic. It was perhaps the most memorable experience of my life.”… Jonathan Ford was planning to visit my brother last March in Mexico and visit the area around that city…. Pat Folsom e-mailed: “Last year I hosted a Russian exchange teacher through Project Harmony, a program that began in Vermont about 10 years ago. We became good friends. This summer, I will visit her at her home in Petrozavodsk. Next year will be my last in teaching as I am determined to do something else for the rest of my working life. I don’t know what that will be, which is scary and exciting.”… Diane Gallo DeFrancisci sold her business on Long Island (Bridal Boutique of Manhasset) after 18 years in business. She and Len plan to move to New Beach, Florida…. Two years ago, Norman Gillespie left his mergers-and-acquisitions practice to teach at George Mason University Law School in Arlington, Va. After two years as a prosecutor for the Appellate Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office in Connecticut, Nancy (Lester) has joined the legal department of Dow Jones & Co…. Paul Goodwin served as acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UConn last year. “Let me tell you, it was an act! I’ve also lectured in the Caribbean on subjects as diverse as Spanish New Orleans, the Maya, and Roatan Island, and again served as a Smithsonian Institution study leader and visited Buenos Aires, Iguassu Falls, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn (where we saw the sun rise — very unusual), Santiago, and Machu Picchu in Peru. Giving a lecture in Cusco (11,250 feet) was an adventure in higher education. My text on Latin America appeared in a seventh edition, and I contributed 15 articles to the recently published Encyclopedia of Latin American History.”… Linda Gramatky Smith is executive assistant to the CFO of Fortune Brands (a holding company for Titleist and Cobra golf, Jim Beam, and Day-Timers). “It’s a great job, where I can use all my life experience and problem-solving.” Last year she designed a Little Toot greeting card for Peaceable Kingdom Press. Ken ’55 works for Connecticut Hospice (the first U.S. hospice), and son Andrew
’90 does computer consulting work after passing exams to become a Microsoft certified systems engineer in San Francisco. Daughter Tina got her M.S.W. from NYU and moved out to California where her husband is an LAPD cop…. From Ron Green: “Like many contemporaries, I was beginning to anticipate a productive retirement from Digital Equipment when the chip hit the fan. Downsizing proved to be among the best events in my professional career. After leaving Digital, I put my energies into establishing a human resources consulting practice. I have focused on what I know best: labor and compensation issues, international staff planning, performance management, and general consulting. The last five years have been an education and a stimulus unmatched in my corporate experience. We are now modestly, but increasingly, successful.”… Bill Haverreports: “Son Doug is a chef and opened his own fine dining restaurant in Richmond. Cheryl is a pharmacist and mother of our 10-year-old twin granddaughters. Jobwise, I spend most of my time on local, statewide, and national efforts to improve/reform/energize math education at all levels.”… Jeff Hillier wrote: “Older daughterLaura ’90 is a county health education officer in Charles County, Md.. Amy continues in Univ. of Pennsylvania doctoral program in social policy. Linda (Pike ’65) continues teaching in our local elementary school but longs for more opportunities to write for children’s periodicals. I’m still in guidance in the Exeter schools, and my backyard boatshop is now complete. The first vessel, a small rowboat, should be ready for the water soon.”… Meridee Hutt Dornhoff reports: “My oldest, Sharon, after kidney failure and months of dialysis, is now well and feeling healthy again. I was able to donate a kidney to her, which she has so far not rejected. She was back to full activities in six weeks, though it took me a while to recover. It’s amazing how the balance of muscles in the whole abdominal area shift with the removal of a rib. Still, it was worth it.”…Joyce Killay Patton gave an update from Iowa City, which involves son J.J.’s marriage and graduation from medical school — both in May. “Glenn and I had an interesting swim-team recruiting trip to Slovenia in March, and we recommend this developing country for anyone to visit. Friends have told us that the capital, Ljubljana, will be the next city that students will be flocking to.”… Martha Lindholm Lentz wrote: “Jim and I returned for a second visit to New Zealand and covered most of the South Island. Jim fished many of the rivers and streams, and I visited schools. I am now working half time as a special ed teacher and half time with reading recovery, an early-intervention program for first-graders that originated in New Zealand.”… Dorothy (March)and Grandon Harris have celebrated their 30th anniversary, the marriage of their second daughter, and the news that “our older daughter will assist us into the grandparent generation.”… Jane McGrath Prendergastreports: “1996 Olympics were wonderful. Spent two weeks at the Aquatic Center supervising ushers and welcoming guests — and seeing superb skills in the water! After five years, left the 24-hour travel circuit to the Pacific – loved every minute, now working with Coke’s Technical Operations Division.”… Liz Metz McNabwrites: “Some of the hoopla here in Rhode Island surrounding the filming of Spielberg’s Amistad seems to be winding down. To think that just last April my father (Bill Metz ’37) and I, as part of the UCC New England delegation celebrating the 150th birthday of the American Missionary Assn., visited the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans — viewing the original signed documents by John Q. Adams — and Talledega College near Birmingham, which has unbelievable murals of the event. Little did we know that this very important event — but little known to the general public — would become such a present-day media event.“… John Meynwrites: “Karen and I will have been married 30 years in a few months and we still like each other. Eldest son Jim is well employed, as evidenced by a decision to purchase weekend Red Sox season tickets (some of which I get to purchase). I floss, bicycle, excessively recycle, compost, slog (slow jog), river sample, erg machine row, organic garden, invest, and fund raise. Which quickly leads to a word from our sponsor. Packardis still teaching at Plymouth State College and doing research at Dartmouth. “Spring break starts today and I’m taking off for Big Bend National Park in Texas. My favorite place to go, however, is Alaska. My friend Roger and I are planning to build a house this summer in Holderness (N.H.), the site of On Golden Pond except we are not going to be on golden pond but on golden puddle (an old beaver pond).”… Lynn Parker Schiavi was “once again present at the birth of a grandson, my second. Awesome! Last June, I traveled to Chipiona, Spain, to visit my brother, staying on his wooden sailboat. I’m still running an aquacise class two mornings a week, working with Catholic Youth Ministry, and just became chairperson for our local hospital auxiliary.”…Jonathan Peabody wrote last year: “Our twin sons graduated from college: Christopher, environmental engineering at Syracuse, and Stephen, business at Gettysburg.” On an otherwise relaxing Caribbean cruise, Jonathan was one of the few eyewitnesses to the shooting down of the civilian planes by Cuba’s military….David Piasecki has been working in financial services for the past 15 years, now as senior vice president with Primerica Financial Services, a subsidiary of The Travelers Group. “Life is great: married 34 years to Ruth — happily! Our greatest accomplishment is our children. Family is fortune, and I am extremely wealthy.”… From Camden, S.C., Sandra Proul Williams reported last winter: “When I see daffodils blooming the last week of February, I know why I love living in the South. I still teach eighth-grade English and things are going well forAlan at SONOCO. Oldest daughter Sharon ’91 and family are now in Delmar, N.Y., where Doug works for General Electric. Daughter Brenda is a graduate student in clinical-neural psychology at the Univ. of Utah. Son Scott graduated from Lafayette in math and economics.”… Art Purinton in Toledo, Ohio, writes: “Elizabeth ’98 is our fourth generation to attend Bates, and we were pleased!”… I had lunch with Esther Rosenthal Zellweger (who uses Esther Mechler professionally in her animal protection work) soon after she faxed me the following uplifting and brief news: “Freud said love and work are the big two. Am lucky to have both.”… Hugh Sadlier is back in high-school guidance full time after a 14-year “sabbatical” as a sheetrock contractor. He is the assistant dean of students at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine. The Sadliers live near the ocean and enjoy sea kayaking…. John Schatz writes: “At 53, I decided to become a rock s
tar. I made a recording of poems and stories, worked with a jazz pianist, and now Abe Lincoln Mimics Fred Astaireis available in tape and CD format. For rest and relaxation, I perform angioplasties.” John sent a copy of his tape and it is absolutely the best! All of you would love to hear “The Reunion” (yep, about ours in ’93)…Jamie Schloss writes: “After living in California for more than 25 years, my wife and I relocated to Kentucky, where we purchased a 514-acre horse farm in the heart of the thoroughbred industry. Our farm, Castle Rock Stud, boards 35 broodmares and layups, and we stand one stallion at stud, a horse name Count The Time, who was a Grade III winner of over $677,000. We expect about 30 foals from him in 1997.”… Greg Shea reports: “Granddaughter Haily Allison Shea, Susan and my first, was 2 in January. Number two is due in June. It’s indescribably grand! Daughter Beth is the biotechnician at Bates in Carnegie Science. Susan and I continue to work at making sense out of the changing health-care environment. Experience, values, and commitment are essential if we are to assure a better system. We are, however, looking forward to and planning for retirement — before enough is too much.”… Mark Silverstein writes: “Dunkin’ Donuts and KFC are flourishing in Concord, N.H. Son Jared is Williams ’00. When we were looking at Williams, Karen and I ran into Bob Peck, presently the athletic director. He looked great and was as congenial as ever! Bates has really become a hot school, and I’m always proud to say I was a graduate. (I might have a tough time getting in today).”… Joan (Spruill) Andren and Dick Andren note: “We are still teaching: year 29. It has been a wonderful ride, but nearly time to get off. We still spend summers in Dixmont, Maine. Son Joel has been teaching English in China and doing graduate work in Chinese in the old imperial capital of Xian. Nora has finished her sophomore year at Western Washington Univ. Dick will bike across Maine (180 miles) as a fund-raising event for the American Lung Assn.”… Eric Silverberg is still working at Smithsonian Observatory. At this point, they still don’t know when they’ll be moving to Hawaii! Rhoda (Morrill) is teaching sixth grade special ed in Hudson, N.H. Daughter Kristen graduated from Univ. of Texas Law School and clerks for a federal judge in D.C. Daughter Lee has received her master’s in math from North Carolina State and is to be married.”…Joanna Starr is in the San Francisco insurance business. “I’ve been promoted to assistant vice president, personal client services at Marsh & McLennan Inc. Son Richard graduated from Harvard Law in 1995 and is doing associate boot camp with a Boston law firm. Son Bill is at Harvard as a graduate teaching fellow, working on his dissertation.”… Gail Tupper Hayden and Perry ’63 flew to Seattle and worked their way across the Olympic Peninsula, British Columbia, Alberta, and enjoyed a spine-tingling adventure through Glacier National Park. “I learned to downhill ski. My year as the president of the Henniker Rotary Club was action packed, full of accomplishments, and a great experience! Perry had six-vessel bypass last February and is doing great.”… Valerie Wilson DuPuy hopes to be accepted in a B.F.A. program somewhere in Colorado, Arizona, or New Mexico with the intent of pursuing her master’s. “I enjoy being a college kid again. My age doesn’t seem to bother anyone! This is not at all where I expected to be at age 54. Life is going to be what I make it, but going it alone is sometimes lonely and scary. I’ll make it, though, as I’m a tough Batesie girl, right!”… Jennifer Wingate Gilchrist continues to enjoy working for Diversified Visiting Nurse as a home health aide, certified nursing assistant. She had a wonderful reunion with Paula Downey Bacon on Cape Cod last summer, especially Paula’s slides on her African safari. Jennifer plans to spend two weeks this summer at her timeshare in St. Martin, West Indies, swimming, snorkeling, and exploring reefs. She hopes to do some work for Earthwatch upon retirement…. Alice Winter Empie writes: “I left my principalship at Mt. Paran Christian School to start two programs at another private school in Atlanta, The Lovett School. I’ve started a program for students with ‘learning differences’ in grades nine through twelve and also initiated an in-school tutoring program, where outside adult tutors work with students on specific subjects during study hall periods. Jeff continues as a professor in a graduate school division at Georgia Tech, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology.”
