We are saddened by the death of George Buker on Nov. 13 and offer our sympathy to his two sons and four daughters, who also lost their mother, Erna Larrabee Buker ’39, on Aug. 28…. Bill Coffin and Amy lead a full life in Clearwater, Fla., where Amy is active in several organizations and Bill chairs the board of trustees of Ranch Mobile, their retirement park…. Irene Cook Putnam saw granddaughter Sarah Putnam ’00, a first-year Bates student and daughter of K.C. ’69 and Linda (Halleck ’70), perform with the Bates dance group on Reunion Weekend…. In spite of health problems, Harriet and Art Danielson still participate in craft shows. They won second prize at the Marshfield (Mass.) Fair for a carved shore bird…. Travels of Alice and Bob Harper included a trip to California and Seattle, then a two-week tour of Alaska. They had cruised Alaska before but this time enjoyed inland travel and found the scenery spectacular…. Betty Hunt Ellis managed to play golf twice a week last summer but felt her scores didn’t always justify the effort. This year’s mini-reunion was in Danvers, Mass., at the home of Jeanne Walker Hapgood. Present wereBetty Ellis, Margaret Melcher Chamberlain, Betty Stockwell Oakes, Happy Walker Webber ’36. They spent “two carefree days of laughter, chatter, and food.” Says Betty, “It would seem nothing ever changes.”… Arnold Kenseth was reelected to the board of the Friends of Archibald MacLeish Collection at Greenfield Community College where he was involved in a month of celebrating MacLeish as his life and poetry related to his time in Amherst. Arnold continues to give poetry readings — in May at Bates, in July at St. Andrews-by-the-Sea — and he videotaped an hour-long program for the Amherst TV station. He and Betty traveled once again to the Bay of Fundy and had good visits wih Peg and Clifton Grayand the Chick Martins…. Geneva Kirk and members of the Lewiston Historical Commission are having fun visiting fourth-grade classes in Lewiston schools to show the students household items of 50 to 100 years ago. They ask the students to guess which member is giving a true description of an object, reminiscent of the TV show To Tell the Truth. The winner receives a copy of one of the commission’s publications, two of which Geneva wrote over the past few years…. Sybil and Thurston Long were pleased that their grandson, Gregory Struve, son of Nancy Long Struve ’67, is working with Bates, Colby and Bowdoin faculty members “introducing the use of interactive computers as a teaching aid with such languages as German, French, Spanish and Chinese.” The Mellon Foundation made this three-year program possible…. We were sorry to hear of the death of Emerson Reed, husband ofLibby MacDonald Milliken Reed, in January 1996. They had been married a little over two years and shared many happy times, attending concerts and other musical and cultural events. They both belonged to the local Episcopal Church. Libby’s daughter, Ann, lives in Hawaii and is a nurse in the Hilo State Hospital. Libby has four grandchildren and four great-grandhildren. She would welcome seeing anyone traveling near Medford, Ore…. Barney Marcus reports he is still skiing, biking, and walking and all is well with his family, which includes six grandchildren ranging in age from 7 to 23…. It will be a snowy Maine winter again for Clifton and Margaret McKusick Gray, who will forgo Florida sunshine and the long round trip and remain in Thomaston…. There were three mini-reunions for Priscilla and Chick Martin. First they were guests of Maxine Avery, widow of “Bud” Avery in Monmouth. Then they lunched with Elsie and Elliott Foster at the Wayfarer in Bedford, N.H., and finally met with the Kenseths when Arnold conducted services at the Monson church…. Betty Stevens Earleand Ion plan to move in April to a new apartment in Rustington. It is not easy to leave their lovely three-floor home, but it will be simpler to care for smaller quarters. The year has had many highlights for the Earles: A golden wedding anniversary, Ion’s 80th birthday, and son Michael’s birthday celebration with many family and friends from near and far. Betty now proudly possesses two new knee joints, which necessitated hospitalization and then convalescence at Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summer residence on the Isle of Wight. Now she’s good as new and hoping to make our Reunion…. Jeanne Walker Hapgoodbecame a computer owner at the insistence of her children (join the club!) and is now learning some of its “intricacies,” mostly sending and receiving e-mail. In October she visited her daughter in Prescott, Ariz., and appreciated the wonderful scenery, so different from New England…. “A good year for the Yorks,” says Bob. En route to Maine from Florida, they stopped for several days in North Carolina with friends. In July Bob taught a class in Maine history at Univ. of Southern Maine to a class of more than 30 students. He and Jan had lots of company and lots of lobster (“guests expect it”). They still play tennis several times a week (doubles) both in Brunswick and Florida.
