Retirements are in the news from many classmates who can enjoy travel and have more time for family and grandchildren, as Jim Anderson is doing…. Joe Andrew retired from teaching in 1987 and sells some real estate now…. AlthoughWill and Melissa Meigs Barbeau have closed their thirty-three-year PR business, they aren’t idle. Will is ecology columnist for the local weekly paper and plays clarinet in the Senior Citizens Providence Civic Orchestra. Lissa enjoys duplicate bridge and does the books for a son-in-law’s construction business. In mid-September, she hosted a mini-reunion with Nancy Jones Lowe and Gladys Bovino Dunn.The Barbeaus say, “Don’t let anything keep you from our 45th Reunion.”… Linc Barlow went on his annual Caribbean cruise in February, and plays his baby grand piano regularly…. Any classmate traveling to Milan, Italy, can look up Anita Coshnear, widow of Ted. She remains interested in Bates because of Ted and his class, enjoys the class letters, and is trying to maintain her English by reading the alumni magazine, the Economist, and the Herald Tribune. She lives at Piazzale Bande Nere 10, 2 0416, Milano, Italy…. After five years at Seoul International School, Bob ’50 and Gladys Bovino Dunn left there last July 1, easing the transition by stops in Hawaii and San Francisco…. Entering sweepstakes for a hobby, Barbara Buote Adams won a four-day trip for four to Disney World in the Legend of the Lion King contest. She still writes for the Lewiston Sun-Journal, and is now learning to use Windows 95…. Charlie Clark wonders if he andMargery (Schumacher ’52) are the first ’51ers to have a grandchild at Bates. Their oldest of seven, Jennifer, has been admitted to the Class of 2000! Charlie plans to retire at the end of 1997 after teaching for thirty years in the history department of the University of New Hampshire…. Glen Collins retired in November 1994 from the Arizona state land department, but is a volunteer on several land-use committees and in his church. Golf, an unfinished cabin near Flagstaff, and five grandchildren keep him busier than ever…. Ginny and Bob Crandall love their new house on the beach in Rye, New Hampshire, where they live from May through December — then it’s off to St. Petersburg. In April 1995, they visited Nancy and Martin “Zip” French ’52 in North Carolina, and in the summer see Lee and Ruth Parr Faulkner ’52…. Although he retired some time ago, Bob Davis has kept up his pilot’s license and flew on several fire patrols in Maine last summer. He is active in Randolph town politics…. In 1995-1996 Bob Dean chaired the Chicago section of the Institute of Food Technologists. He is editing a second edition of a book on food processing. Bob retired in March 1995 from the USDA Food and Consumer Service in Chicago…. “It’s been an interesting and challenging interlude,” says William Dill, who has been serving for eighteen months as interim president of Anna Maria College in Holden, Massachusetts. Last year Bill was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, “a strange turn for an English major,” he says. Jean (McLeod) keeps her Maine ties as a volunteer at Maine Medical Center and has tutored math in the learning lab at Anna Maria. By mid-1996 they will have more time for sailing and grandchildren…. We hope that Jane Emery Moore saw Jan Clark Anderson in Florida as planned. In the summer, Jane also spends two weeks of time-share at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine…. In her “volunteer” full-time job, Dottie Fryer Hoyt is the state of New York contact person for the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, and coordinates a local family support group…. It’s an interesting retirement hobby for Carol Goddard Reid, who is discovering her ancestors, all 150 direct-line grandparents, and all according to information in the Mormon Family History Center…. Although Elwood Gray enjoyed his thirty-six years as director of guidance at Scarsdale (New York) High School, he finds that each of the last eight years since he retired “gets better.” Along with extended travel to the Far East and Southeast Asia, he relishes the cultural offerings on a couple of trips annually to Europe. In the summer he “nourishes his Maine biological roots,” but his heart is in New York City’s cultural programs…. Since retiring as president of Livingston University, Asa Green and Betty enjoy setting their own schedules and seeing grandchildren. He does some consulting for the NCAA, “enjoyable, though hectic at times.”… As of last September dentist Bob Greene hung up his drill. He and Ellen have moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, but still summer at their Boothbay Harbor cottage…. In Washington state, Janet Hayes Sterling works in outside sales in the security industry, having recently finished work at the new U.S. Naval Reserve buildings on the Everett Naval Base. She swims with a group in Lake Washington from May through September…. Retired for four years, John Hurlin is a volunteer AARP tax aide, and enjoys photography and gardening. The Hurlins spent four weeks in Europe visiting their son in London then toured tulip fields of Holland and medieval towns of Belgium…A year ago Phil and Jean Johnson Bird cruised on the Russian waterway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Jean volunteers at the Colby College Museum of Art and co-directs a duplicate bridge group in Augusta where she and Phil are life masters…. Nancy Jones Lowe spends half of the year in Columbia, Missouri, and half in Snowmass, Colorado. She and Henry went to Florence and Rome in the spring — “a wonderful review of cultural heritage.”… This spring Lee (Mainland ’52 ) andHenry “Jim” Kelly are on sabbatical from Texas Christian University. He left as chair of the chemistry department last June…. Still doing TV consulting, mainly for the McLaughlin Group, Karl Koss, who participates in curling, attended the U.S. Senior Men’s competition in Mankato, Minnesota, last February. He also attended the White House press correspondents dinner hosted by the Clintons…. Hugh andJudy Litchfield Van Liew have added on to their house in Barnstable Village on Cape Cod, where they will live. All last fall Judy was going back and forth from the Buffalo area to supervise the work…. In Annandale, Virginia, Kim Macomber Deverill still manages the office for four psychotherapists. She and Art enjoyed a few days in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Parks. Previously she had been in Korea to meet daughter Courtenay, and they toured China and Tibet for three weeks. Tibet was like “living in a National Geographic special,” she says…. Still working as office manager in husband Dick’s orthopedic office, Joan McCurdy Elton also does volunteer work and travels “when time allows.” They bought a time share in Aruba with Mac’s sister, and spend April there…. Imogene “Mickey” McKee Purkishoped to become “computer literate” this past winte r…. Rayand Carlene Fuller Moore are still somewhat surprised to find so many opportunities to enjoy life in retirement. Near the top of the list is attending soccer games of five grandchildren…. If Dutchess County (New York) winters and taxes keep up, Chet Morss says he may get a new southern address. He takes occasional acting jobs and plays golf…. Bob and Peg Moulton McFadden have made wonderful friends on their bird-watching adventures, and have many volunteer projects to fill their time. They visited Costa Rica last year and in January went to Trinidad, Tobago, and St. Lucie. They also had a “too-brief” visit with Bill and Jean McLeod Dill,ending in a bookstore to stock up on “mighty tomes” and mysteries…. Jane Osborne Thurber is a board member and treasurer of Adopt-A-Neighborhood. With volunteers and donations, the group has been fixing up an old thirteen-room house in one of the worst neighborhoods of Lynchburg, Virginia…. Edie Pennucci Mead enjoyed the D.C. Bates Club program at the Kennedy Center when Bates students presented a musical program. “Washington is, as usual, a mess and sometimes wonderful, crazy but never dull.”… In Maine, Norma Reese Jones says her main activity is work on the Georges River Land Trust annual garden tour in July. After seven years on the school board, she decided not to run for re-election. Austin worked with the L.L. Bean crew building two new lean-tos on the Appalachian Trail at Piazzi Rock and at Potaywadjo…. Rol Risska has insulated his log home in Harpswell so he can stay later in the fall until he moves to North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, for the winter…. Now that she has retired from the Muskie Archives at Bates,Lois Spofford Griffiths is “having a ball” doing all the projects she has put off. She skates at the Underhill Arena and attends College concerts. Art ’50 still runs the Monmouth Press…. Dick Westphal says, “Just enjoying copious free time for play and travel with modest amount of civic and church service.” |

For the National Council of Churches USA, the Reverend George Conklin is consulting in the design and startup of a Worldwide Faith news service on the Internet. He continues to serve on the directorate of the UCC office of Communications. He is a member of the National Council’s Communications Commission, as well as the North American Broadcast section of the World Association for Christian Communication and theSequoia religion newsmagazine. George does considerable travel in this job, especially throughout Latin America…. George and Ann Parnell Davis expect to be on the road in 1996 and will be on hand for our 45th Reunion in 1997. Because of much time spent in caregiving, for the first time in thirty-three years they missed taking a vacation in their trailer. | ||

The long-lost roommate of Dick Davignon finally connected with him after thirty-eight years.Eric Lederer visited Dick in Chatham, Massachusetts, where they had great fun catching up. Dick, who later visited Eric in Denver, has published two poems in Spanish…. Now retired from the U.S. Department of Education after thirty-two years,Jean Dickson Narayanan and her husband built their new Yankee Barn post-and-beam home in West Barnet, Vermont. On top of a hill, the house has an awesome view of Harveys Lake and Roys Mountain. They are both involved in the Catamount Arts Program and the Old Mill Fitness Center….Arlene Gardner Foulds has completed twelve years on the Torrington Board of Education. She is president of the local soup kitchen board and is involved with YMCA Camp Mohawk in Cornwall, Connecticut…. Dividing their time between Ontario and Naples, Florida, Pete and Wilma Gero Clapham find lots of time to play golf. During Tulip Festival they enjoyed a visit from Carolyn Cram…. Trips to the United States from her home in Oslo, Norway, a family wedding, and building a new home have made it a busy year for Lois Ginsberg Reiersol. Lois also moved their psychotherapy office to the new home, making life simpler…. Their garden center keeps Elaine and Dave Goddardoccupied, but they have found time to travel to Nevada, New York, Alaska, and Canada, and they still enjoy mountain climbing…. As part of her work with Jews in the former Soviet Union, Judy Kent Patkin visited several cities in Ukraine: Deupropetrovosh, Krivoi Rag, Kiev, and Zhitomire. One daughter was married in October and both girls live and work in New York…. Retired from Brandeis University, Norm Levine keeps busy as an academic advisor and as coach of the Boston Running Club…. Not retired yet, Jim McGrath is still active on two USTA tennis teams, enjoys local bicycle trips, and travels to the Marco Island home whenever possible. He celebrated a son’s wedding and the arrival of a second grandson last year…. Helen Milam Staveley will be moving to the Seattle area this year. Now retired, she has made trips to Spain and England…. In spite of some health problems, Bill and Janet Neal Allen now can do some overdue redecorating of their house. Bill is still involved with community theater in Windsor, Connecticut…. A part-time minister of the Congregational Church UCC of Bristol, Maine, John Nickerson is a registered pastoral counselor. He serves as a consultant at a Camden medical center, setting up a chaplaincy program. He and Brady work on their new home overlooking the South Bristol harbor. She is on the staff of a demonstration school in Edgecomb, and their sons are active in educational and athletic endeavors…. The class extends sympathy to Pete and Ellie Peck Rekemeyer on the death last June of their youngest son, who was drowned in a raft accident while working for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. They had a visit from their daughter and children from Hawaii and all went camping in Wisconsin and attended an older son’s wedding in August. She has one more year as state president of AAUW in Idaho and continues with other volunteer work…. Class race-car driver Grant Reynolds has been racing his vintage 20854 and modern Formula Vee cars at various Northeast tracks. Still consulting on environmental issues and base closures, he particularly enjoyed teaching environmental politics during Short Term at Bates…. Edie and Bill Ryall had an active year with a trip to Nova Scotia, boating and swimming with the extended family in East Douglas, Massachusetts, and the arrival of a second grandchild. This is Bill’s last year as a school-board trustee in Carle Place, New York…. Derryfield School bestowed a special honor uponCharlie Sanborn by establishing an endowed fellows program in his name. Other highlights include a four-week trip to England, Scotland, and Wales, plus an upcoming daughter’s wedding and the arrival of their third grandchild…. Although he has retired as superintendent of schools in Hadley, Massachusetts, Dick Sullivan works part time at Smith College in the student-intern program. He and Edie (Lysaght’56) have seven grandchildren and son Rick ’81 is mayor of Westfield. The Sullivans now own a summer place at Pine Point, Maine…. Retired after teaching for thirty-six years,Mary Lou Townley Swasey is married and has moved to the East Bay area of Pittsburg, California. They have built phase one of a retirement home in Damariscotta, Maine…. Watching the preparations for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta has been exciting for Nick and Janice Tufts Hughes. Her middle school is under construction of new classrooms and a gym. Nick retired from Coca-Cola, which enables them to play more golf, fish, and work on kitchen renovations. Time with four grandchildren also is important…. For two years Margot Turitz Elkin filled in at the White Plains public schools as a school social worker, so now she is looking for another job. Husband David has retired…. In South Salem, New York,Hank ’56 and Ruth Warfield Bauer enjoy life in their 1844 house after much work on renovation and an addition. Ruth teaches teachers who are working on master’s degrees, and Hank gives drawing lessons in his new studio…. At the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Pete Wicks still teaches and does research in the reorganized Department of Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology. He also published a paper last June. Pete and Nancy have three grandchildren…. Enjoying their retirement, Ellie and Dave Wilkinson spend time at their year-round home on Campobello Island. Other plans were put on hold when daughter Ellen ’82 and Kevin Howard ’84 had twins…. It’s a good life when you go to work when you are available which is what Bob Williams does in his oil heating business. Son Ken has taken it over so that Bob and Judie (Roberts ’60) can spend winters in Jupiter, Florida. Bob is “into” a new exercise-weight training routine. | ||

They were joined by Rene Goldmuntz and companion…. Still running an engineering and surveying company in southwest Colorado, for five yearsHarry Goff has been a member of the Colorado Board of Registration for Engineeers and Surveyors…. Because of his belief in respect for human rights, David Hall spent the summer and fall of 1995 helping Maine Won’t Discriminate defeat an anti-gay-rights referendum. He and his wife also attended a week-long forestry camp learning how to manage their woods…. Having retired formally last June, in SeptemberBurton Harris became a full-time student in a two-year program at the North Bennett School to study furniture making. This keeps him at work twelve hours a day for a six-and-a-half-day week…. Still working with employment security, Marilyn Macomber Ives also has a Sacred Dance Choir and volunteered to work in Puerto Rico adding a second floor to a nursing home. She also directed a swim week at camp last summer. She and Chris ’58 went camping in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and to southern Florida…. To celebrate his twenty-five years as manager of the Mt. Carroll Mutual Insurance Co., Mary Lou and Cliff Jacobs took a Caribbean cruise, climbing Dunns River Falls at Ocho Rios…. Now retired to Florida, Roger Langley plays tennis and volunteers at the local elementary school. In the summer he works at a private camp for children at Lake George, New York….David Lowry works over sixty hours a week as supervising principal of two schools. He is editor of publications for the Massachusetts School Principals Association, and president of the MASPA Foundation. He and Margie are “empty nesting,” and he is restoring a ’47 Ford…. On Halloween, Bob andMarion Mears MacFarlane headed down the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida and the Bahamas aboard Highland Fling. “The major gift from this experience,” says M.J., “has been the people we have met. We’re learning to `slow down and appreciate each other.'”… John Makowsky says his move to an insurance brokerage firm has been a good one — thirty employees, a great clientele, and a profit…. With happy memories of those warm Reunion days in June, Chris andBetty Cook Miller say they “burrowed in for the long New England winter!”…Peggy Montgomery says her notes are a “wary tiptoeing into cyberspace spurred on by Bud (Baxter)’s persistence that class secretary stuff be online –it is!”…. Alumni Council member Ronnie Scudder Harrold says her experience has been interesting and energizing. She urges graduates to join the Career Advisory Network of the Office of Career Services, and contact the OCS to volunteer…. Janet Spiers Forsman expresses concern about the lack of good preparation they see in students at Clinton Community College. She recommends less rote learning, fewer multiple choice tests, more problem solving, more reading and writing. She says, “I cannot urge you enough to become involved in your public schools. Offering your creative, intelligent advice would encourage change.”… For thirty-two years Carl Tobiehas been an economist and statistician for EEI, the trade association of electric utility companies. He says he hasn’t missed many of Lou Brown‘s major cocktail parties the first Saturday of January there in Washington, D.C., and Fred Drayton usually is there also…. Nancy Tyler Harris reports on last year’s trip to southern Switzerland and St. Andrews, Scotland. Ken ’58 directed The Marriage of Figaro last spring, his first. Another first, a grandchild, is due…. Having retired in June 1994 from teaching junior-high and middle-school English for thirty-five years, Eleanor Vanderpool moved to her new Cape in the New Hampshire hills. She does substitute teaching two or three times a week…. “Still up to my old tricks,” says Gene Verdier. In September 1994 “went back to truckin’ big rigs over the road, mostly team.” He is “proud of Bates staying with the times,” he adds, “proud of Clinton standing tall against the Newt Gangrene Raw Deal contract. We’re remortgaging and renovating thirty years as companions in July 1996.”… Clark Whelton is back in New York City writing speeches for Mayor Giuliani. “The city has gone through tremendous changes in the last five years. Over 400,000 jobs now lost in the recession. The new challenge is to deliver vital services without raising taxes. But crime is way down, and the city is reviving. In terms of communications and global competition, the twenty-first century is already here.” |
