Next Reunion in 1998. Beckie Swanson Conrad, until recently assistant to the President at Bates, has joined Garrand & Co., Inc., where she is responsible for special projects. Because of her experience in local organizations, Becky is well qualified for the job. She has been active in the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce, Advocates for Children, and LA Arts, and served as coordinator of Co-Enterprise of the Maine-Quebec trade conference, founded by Garrand and two other businesses…. In December 1994Charles Tarrio received a Department of Commerce Bronze Medal. He is a physicist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Last February, he and his wife, Danielle, bought a home in nearby Wheaton. She is a physician at the Washington (D.C.) Adventist Hospital. |

Next Reunion in 1998. Mary Allen Wink is a stay-at-home mom with Teresa, four, and Clement, one. The family has been in the Chicago area of Berwyn for three years, but she misses Manhattan…. In Newington, Connecticut, Tom andBetsy Bartman Feery keep busy with their two children. Betsy contemplates her future with Shawmut Bank because of the merger with Fleet and wouldn’t mind going back to Short Term 1983 for a little R & R!…Diana Boucher Boyd says that going back to chiropractic school was the smartest thing she ever did. She attends Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, and hopes to return to the East Coast next year after she graduates…. From Washington, D.C., Jane Calderwoodwrites that her boss has been elected to the Senate after sixteen years in the House. “Life in the `world’s greatest deliberative body’ takes a little getting used to, but the change is well worth it.” Incidentally, there are five Batesies on the staff and lots of story telling…. In Charlottesville, Virginia, Susan Cameron Reres and family are building a new home which she hopes will be their last move for a long time…. Besides beginning the Ph.D. degree program in social welfare policy at Case Western Reserve University, David Campbell will continue his full-time job as vice-president with the Center for Families and Children. David says he would like to see Bates well represented at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland this fall!…. Wally ’82 and Deborah Clark-Dillingham attended the premiere of The Shawshank Redemption and rubbed elbows with some celebrities: Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, and Morgan Freeman. Deb says it was fun, but reality hit early the next morning when she had to go back to Penguin Books, where she was recently promoted to director of marketing services…. It’s good to hear from Dave Ehrenthal who has returned to New York City after three years in Paris. “Starting a business is even more difficult than following a Robin Brooks statistics lecture,” he says. Dave and two friends have founded a company. “Some of you may have noted The Voyager’s Collection in your hotel room. That’s us.” They have been written up in U.S. News & World Report, USA Today,Lodging, and Catalog Age, probably the only interactive shopping service on TV in America, in the New York Sheraton Hotels…. Sarah Eusden Gallop and family have bought a new home in Winchester, Massachusetts. She says they are excited — and broke…. Last spring Nancy Farwell French received a master’s degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources. She still works for a non-profit institute using remote sensing (satellite imagery) for terrestrial ecosystem applications, and has authored several papers. She and Rob ’85 live outside of Ann Arbor in a one-hundred-year-old farmhouse…. Jack and Clare Federspiel Hounsell and Casey, two, had a visit from her roommate,Leigh Peltier. Clare is a trader with Stein Row and enjoys life in Chicago, although she misses New England…. Tom Hildreth has been made a partner in his Manchester, New Hampshire, law firm…. At St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Lisa Harvie McIlwain is director of human resources. She says her job is more difficult now due to recent downsizing. She and Chuck get comic relief from their daughters, two and four…. In July, John Hoyt began work in the marketing department of Hewlett Packard’s Medical Imagery Group in Andover, Massachusetts. He has completed his second year at MIT’s Sloan School…. Last year, Andy Kling was transferred to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site as the district ranger. His wife, Laurie, is also in the National Park Service but lives four hours away…. After years of traveling around Europe, the South Pacific, and the U.S.,Timothy Lea has settled in Long Island (New York) City. He works in the theater trade, for which he has written and directed several plays, hoping to get more writing done…. Dr.Steven and Lisa Farnham McAfee are buying a home in Wayland, Massachusetts, glad finally to establish some roots. Currently Steve is at Mass General in the pediatric bone marrow department, according to his dad, Dr. Robert McAfee ’56, Sc.D. ’95…. Dr. Alison MacDonald specializes in pediatric anesthesia at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts…. Glenn Martin is currently on a year’s leave from his law firm to care for baby Samantha. He says laundry and dishes keep him very busy. Eileen is at home full time now and trying to figure out how to turn a Bates English degree into a satisfying and rewarding career that allows flexibility. Any ideas, classmates?…Margaret Orto writes from her co-op in New York City that she works for Sterling Publishing as director of trade sales and marketing…. Class Secretary Leigh Peltier reports no changes in her life — same house, same husband, same job. She did go to Arizona with a side trip to Vegas and did manage to come away a winner. “Maybe I have found my calling!”…In Carmel Valley, California, Denny and Meg Randall Jacobs have bought a home and feel fortunate that they escaped the floods…. Dr. Ann Ryer Bittaker is a veterinarian for small animals and has a practice outside Sacramento, California. Son Tyler is two, and step-daughter Amanda is eight…. Tony Savastano opened his new law office in New Bedford, Massachusetts (thanks to news from Betsy Bartman Feery)…. “Goodbye corporate world,” says Ari Soroken. He stayed in Philadelphia after graduating from the Wharton School to open a brew pub with one of his professors. When that deal fell through, he decided to open a Mexican restaurant. Ari’s looking for some wealthy silent partners!…At Boston University, Anita Terpstra completed her Ph.D degree program. She has been accepted by several law schools to study bioethics in health laws, but hadn’t decided which to accept…. Fellow Rhode Islander Valerie Toner is the adult-services librarian at the East Providence Public Library. She recently received a grant from the Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities for a “Poets-in-Person” series at the library…. Bob and Melisande Van Duyne Van Liederkerke have bought an old home in Oak Park, Illinois. She resigned from her sales position of ten years to care for baby Matthew and start a marketing consulting business…. Living in Searsmont, Maine, mother of two sons, Pauline Vashon Wildercontinues to work as a home health and hospice nurse out of Belfast…. Susan Wigley is a research analyst at the National Marine Fisheries Services in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She earned an M.S. degree in biomathematics from North Carolina State University in August 1994. |

From a foggy mountaintop on the road to Salmon Glacier near Hyder, Alaska, Ellen Fine reports that she has spent the last year and a half traveling with her yellow lab pit bull, Leah, back and forth across North America. During that time she has helped to protect old-growth rain forests, and to change logging practices on a global scale. In her travels she has encountered Stephanie Wood and Camille McKayle Stolz. This year, she expects to settle into school and work….
