Alumni Council Recognizes Top Bates Clubs
The Hartford Bates Club received the 1995-96 Club of the Year Award, while the Chicago Bates Club won the Club Attendance Award. Both awards, sponsored by the Alumni Council, were made at Back to Bates weekend last fall and presented by Nancy Higgins ’81, Council vice president. The Hartford Club’s high-quality and varied programming ranged from their traditional “send-off” picnic for new Bates students to a wonderful evening with Bates student musicians, alumni, parents, admitted students and their families.
The club was also cited for the strength of its leadership — co-chairs Anne Sargent ’78 and Leslie Wilcox Briggs ’79 run a large steering committee that is a model in terms of shared responsibilities and regular communication.
The Chicago Club received the attendance award, given to the club with the highest percentage of its membership at any one event, which in this case was a very well-received student production of David Mamet’s Oleanna.
Thank-You to Club Volunteers
The 1996-97 Bates Club calendar year is off to a rousing start!
Bates Club volunteers helped coordinate forty-eight events for local clubs during the first half of the year. This nearly doubles the Bates Club activity of two years ago (fifty-one events were held for our Bates Clubs during the entire club calendar year of 1994-95).
A wide range of events has taken place for the first half of the club calendar year — concerts, pub nights, pro sporting events, College sporting events, first-year student send-offs, recruiting and training meetings for current and prospective club volunteers, faculty lectures, museum tours, theater events, and holiday receptions.
The Alumni Office wishes to thank our energetic and enthusiastic group of Bates Club volunteers for all of their help.
Attention Bates Friends in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware!
Linda Webster ’84 (class president) and Sandy Kornstein ’84 are working to revive the Delaware Valley Bates Club, which covers Bates alumni, parents, and friends in Philadelphia and suburbs, western New Jersey, and northern Delaware. Please contact the Alumni Office if you are interested in getting involved with planning and running events in this area.
