Jeff Brown continues to fight back from throat cancer, and has added Rocky Mountain pass bike riding to his list of activities…. Joel Feingold and Houda report that they’re busy, and continuing to enjoy the Boston area…. David Foster is vice chair of the Bates Board of Trustees, and is also on the board of the Federation of American Scientists. Mina has finished her second novel, and she and David enjoy political activism, triathlons, and cross country ski loppets…. Jim Geitz has amazingly survived the economy and is still at Sony in New Jersey…. Steve Hadge has finished 20 years of public school teaching, the last nine in kindergarten. He’s also certified to be a public school library media specialist. Steve’s still playing tennis…. John Howe is the general manager/executive editor of Citizen Publishing Co. He oversees a daily newspaper, a tourism magazine called Best Read Guide, and tourism brochure distribution operation. Fran, his wife, builds fancy homes on Squam Lake, and son Jason is following in the journalism field as a reporter for Foster’s Daily Democrat. Youngest son Geoffrey retired from the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team and is doing triathlons…. At St. Michael’s College in Vermont, Polly Howlett teaches intensive English classes and college writing to foreign students from around the world, despite increasing visa restrictions, and ESL/EFL teacher training to graduates in the MA-TESL program. She still drives a little red motorcycle on beautiful days and dances for hours at the local contra dances…. Ken Kulas traveled to Egypt last year. He’s coaching baseball and camping with the Boy Scouts. He’s hiking the Appalachian Trail piece by piece, too…. Pat Mador referees college volleyball (including Bates games) and is an assistant state district attorney assigned to Sagadahoc County in Bath…. Since his daughter Cynthia is a member of the Class of ’06, Henry Mauer is still connected to the College. He reports, “It’s still the Ôcommunity’ that makes Bates a special place.”… Mark Sorenson continues to enjoy his therapy practice in Boston, where he includes group, meditation, and other healing techniques…. Big changes for Stu Strahl, who has left Miami and the Everglades conservation movement to become the new director of Brookfield Zoo in Chicago…. Liz Strout attended Yaddo in an attempt to finish her second novel; she read from her work at a big Bates event in New York City last fall…. Steve Vaitones was the assistant coach for the USA Track and Field team at the 2003 World Championships in Paris…. Nancy Witherell sees Ann Bushmiller ’79 at their women’s book club, started almost 19 years ago! She was at the White House last fall to unveil the National Capital Planning Commission redesign of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House and Lafayette Park. She’s also traveling as a singer with the Choral Arts Society of Washington…. Jackie Wolfe and Ray moved west to Waldport, Ore. She’s doing massage, spearheading the spa program at the Adobe Resort, serving on local judicial boards, and sewing costumes for local theater groups.
