Straight Shooters
Bates’ 2005 Sesquicentennial prompts an inquiry of famous firsts. The women’s archery team , seen here in the 1935 Mirror, was one of the first women’s teams at Bates to compete on an intercollegiate basis. Sort of. An eight-person squad participated in the National Intercollegiate Telegraphic Archery Tournament, in which colleges competed on their own campuses and telegraphed scores offsite for tallying. Bates got a “fairly good ranking” in the tourney, reported the Mirror. Photo courtesy of the Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library.
