Mary Cassatt (American, 1884-1926)
Cassatt was among the best-known women Impressionists. While she was born in Pennsylvania, she traveled widely during her life, studying in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Édouard Frère, and Paul Soyer during her early years as an artist. A personal invitation from Edgar Degas led her to join the Impressionists and revisit her style. She eventually came to specialize in works featuring women and their private lives, particularly the bond between mothers and their children. Joyce Treiman’s portrait of Cassatt and Degas in this show features a woman and children in the background, evoking the subject of many of Cassatt’s works.
