Ernest Gillen (Mexican, 1901-1973)
Gillen was an actor primarily appearing in silent films during the 1920s and 30s. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1925 and 1940, reinventing himself when he changed his name as Donald Reed to seem more American as he signed to First National. He often appeared as a stereotypical Latin lover, and was then relegated to supporting roles as sound pictures became popular—showing the lack of diversity and important roles for BIPOC actors in Hollywood’s early years.
