Jay Gould (American, 1982)
Originally from Minneapolis, Gould received his BFA in photography from the University of Wisconsin and his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His work integrates science with photography, combining modern and historic processes with sculpture. His large-scale photographs at Bates plays with self-portraiture, movement, rugged landscapes, and reflections.
Gould’s work is exhibited around the country, including University of Notre Dame; Walters Museum of Art, Baltimore; PhoPa Gallery, Portland, ME; and The Julia Dean Gallery, Los Angeles. He has taught at the Maine Media Workshops and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Gould was also the inaugural Artist in Residence at the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute at Johns Hopkins University and an Artist in Residence at the Penland School of Craft. He has won the Berenice Abbott Prize for an emerging photographer, the Jeannie Pierce Award, and First Place at the Newspace Center for Photography’s International Juried Exhibition.
