Rona Pondick (American, b. 1952)
The Metamorphosis of the Object portfolio consists of nine merged images that incorporate details of Pondick’s sculptures, published in 2009. Each of them matches elements from her work with corresponding details from historical objects originating in Thailand, Italy, Mexico, France, Mesopotamia, Angola, and Japan. For instance, half of Pondick’s face and neck is paired with half of the head of the Seated Buddha in Maravijaya, a five-hundred-year-old bronze. This juxtaposition of seemingly disparate sculptures highlights cultural differences while visualizing universal form.
Pondick studied at Yale University School of Art and received her MFA in 1977. Since 1984 she has had over 52 solo exhibitions and over 202 group exhibitions of her work in museums and galleries internationally. Pondick’s work is in the collections of many institutions worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Morgan Library and Museum, all in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and The Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City.
