Home has always been a place of incredible importance to me. From dinners with my family, to relaxing with my dogs, to hikes in my backyard, my fondest memories are attached to my house in Massachusetts. But further than that, my fondest memories are tied to my family. My mother, my father, my sister, and my dogs are foundations in my life that I know I can always count on for anything from reassurance, comfort, a hug, or a laugh. For my senior studio art thesis, I use watercolor and rotoscope animation to best capture the essence of my home and the love I have for my family. Watercolor was one of the first artistic mediums I was interested in as a child, and partnering it with my newest fascination with the medium of traditional animation, this project also seeks to encapsulate my artistic experience and progress while I have attended Bates College.
Dogs have been in my life for as long as I can remember. Their presence within my home is characteristic of warmth, coziness, excitement, and joy. Seeing the happiness they bring to me and my family, an animation about my home would be incomplete without them. Additionally, the sights I see when pulling into the driveway during school breaks, and the wonderful view of our lively birdhouse in the back, elicit a reaction of welcome comfortability that I have not been able to find anywhere else…welcome comfortability that I will be greeted with hugs from my mother and father and barks from my dogs. Through this rotoscope animation, I have patched together some of the warmest snippets of my home to reflect the affection I have for my family and the life I have been given.
