Erin McCarthy Artist Statement
My journey with clay has always been driven by a desire to blur the lines between functional forms and sculptural abstraction. This series embodies that exploration, specifically focusing on the concept of metamorphosis. Beginning as traditional vessels, the pieces gradually evolve into abstract sculptures, mirroring my own artistic transformation.
Initially, I experimented with purely abstract clay forms. However, the idea of a physical metamorphosis within the sculpture itself captivated me. I chose the traditional coil-building technique, constructing vessels that organically transitioned into abstract shapes. While I started with a general form in mind, I allowed the clay to guide the process, fostering an organic evolution. This approach was inspired by Inaba Chikako’s ceramic work, where she masterfully captures the organic forms of Japanese flora.
Much of my previous training centered on creating functional pieces like vessels and pots. It was a constant struggle to resist the urge to push those forms into the abstract realms I envisioned. This project, finally, provided the freedom to express my true style. These pieces represent a pivotal moment in my artistic growth, where my personal vision reshapes the traditional techniques I’ve learned. I also aimed to challenge the viewer’s perspective, highlighting the transformative power of a shift in viewpoint.
