Join us for an evening with art critic and poet Claire Raymond, who will add context to the exhibition Expressions of Compassion: The Barbara Morris Goodbody Photography Collection with her lecture “Photography, Resistance, & Compassion”.
Raymond holds a doctorate in English literature from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and a bachelors in Philosophy from Yale University. An itinerant academic, after many years at the University of Virginia, she is now based in coastal Maine, instructing for the University of Maine, the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts, and, last year, here at Bates College. She is the author of Photography and Resistance: Anticolonialist Photography in the Americas (2022, Palgrave Macmillan) and The Photographic Uncanny: Photography, Homelessness, and Homesickness (2020, Palgrave Macmillan). She is editor of Enough! Poems of Protest and Resistance, and her eighth book of poems, Dolls, is forthcoming from 2Leaf Press.
Raymond’s poetry books have been recognized as finalists for the Maine Literary Award in Poetry, and her scholarship has been the recipient of an Excellence in Diversity Fellowship at the University of Virginia.
