Chevalier Ignace Joseph de Claussin (French, 1766-1844)
De Claussin was an art dealer, collector and amateur engraver based in Paris, but with connections in England and the Netherlands. Claussin used his business as a study collection, creating copies of etchings by the masters. His copy of Rembrandt’s Self Portrait in a Soft Hat and Embroidered Cloak (1762) is notably facing the opposite direction from the original. This is because he made his copy from the original print rather than the original plate.
